Remember that Maryland Trolley Schmuck?

That's the guy who kvetched about having to provide services to gay weddings. After all, he's a Christian. Well, Christian Post reports that Matt Grubbs, owner of Discover Annapolis Tours, has ceased all wedding services so that he won't run afoul of Maryland's anti-discrimination law.

Cameroon RC Archbishop calls Gay Marriage a 'Crime against Humanity' at Christmas Mass

According to Reuters, Roman Catholic Archbishop Victor Tonye Bakot of Cameroon told followers at Christmas Day mass that "marriage of persons of the same sex is a serious crime against humanity."

Allow me to clue in this schmuck. If there is a crime against humanity in Cameroon, it is the systemic pattern of degradation of LGBT people by the government of this backward country that is abetted by the Catholic Church. This "constitute[s] a serious attack on human dignity or grave humiliation or a degradation of one or more human beings" as defined by the International Criminal Court.

Apparently Catholic University of America is Afraid of Gay People

Earlier this month, Catholic University of America declined to recognize a gay student organization. According to the university:
English: Logo of The Catholic University of Am...

In declining the request for official university recognition of CUAllies, the administrators indicated their belief that, in spite of the group’s stated intent to uphold Catholic Church teachings, it would be extremely difficult for that pledge to be honored over time ... They pointed out that there is a fine line, easily crossed, between a group dedicated to education and support of individuals who identify themselves as homosexuals and one that engages in advocacy on behalf of a homosexual lifestyle.
I  would love to know what the highlighted passage means. In any event, the student have a petition at as well as a website.

Tacky, tacky, tacky!

I am referring to NOM's Christmas e-card. If any of the people managing National Organization for Marriage had a business education or had worked somewhere with a management development program they would realize that an organizational Christmas card is most certainly not the dear leader's Christmas card. These folks continue to confirm just how amateurish they really are.

Guns, Guns and More Guns - Insanity Prevails

speaking at CPAC in Washington D.C. on Februar...
The NRA's Wayne LaPierre is out of his fucking mind. When I was shot (with a .45 caliber handgun) there was a considerable probability that armed law enforcement would be in close proximity. The gunman was stealthy and realized that the immediate confusion     screaming people running in all directions     would allow him to literally walk away. The high caliber and immense noise actually served the shooter's escape by causing more panic.

Mr. LaPierre is not interested in the obvious solution, which is stricter gun control. Thus, he is obliged to construct a substitute for gun control which may, or may not, even pass the laugh test.

Only Peter Sprigg!

Only Peter Sprigg (Family Research Council's point guard on the gay) could claim that the Boy Scouts of America is the victim of discrimination by United Parcel Service. Sprigg, a bigot among bigots, is mindlessly committed to the notion that Christians are ever the victims of the "homosexual agendaTM." Sprigg has a bottomless well of intellectual dishonesty.
Although FRC criticized UPS immediately when this news broke in mid-November, we held off on a final decision to stop doing business with them. ... Only after it was made clear to Mr. Perkins that UPS would not budge on their new policy discriminating against the Scouts did we announce publicly our decision to seek other vendors for our shipping needs.

NOM "victorious" after getting their ass kicked

So I got this email from National Organization for Marriage today. In the email, Brian Brown is staking a claim to numerous Pyrrhic victories that they either orchestrated or funded. It's a gimme-money email so I guess that they are trying to convince donors that their money is well spent. Or, perhaps, they are trying to convince themselves.

OK, I admit that they were successful in getting a marriage amendment passed in North Carolina but that's about it. It's not like the North Carolina legislature was on the verge of voting for marriage equality. So what's the effect?

NOM embraces another hate group

Alarmed by the prospect of marriage equality in Illinois, National Organization for Marriage is now referencing a screed by Illinois Family Institute. IFI is designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. As the SPLC points out:
The Illinois Family Institute (IFI), which says it dedicates itself to issues surrounding “marriage, family, life and liberty,” is heavily focused on attacking gay people and homosexuality in general. It maintains “working partnerships” with other hard-line groups...
I guess they have a new working partner in NOM. This is a group that was once headed up by Peter "Porno Pete" LaBarbera.

John Helmberger has some weird ideas about what "oppression" means

John Helmberger, head of the Minnesota Family Council is one of the more strident anti-gay  voices from the Christian right. Like many of his colleagues, Helmberger is also a professional victim who clearly believes that gay people are to be relegated to the "evil pervert" corner of life. Helmberger's latest gimme money email contains the usual boilerplate, with an interesting summation.

NOM is desperate for money

The latest tactic of National Organization for Marriage is to ask for money as cash in advance of any campaign that people can rally around. According to their "logic," supporters of marriage equality expect to lose at the Supreme Court (which is news to me). Therefore, we are going to launch state initiatives to convince the Court that people support equal marriage.

In point of fact, NOM has been incapable of stopping marriage equality when it is decided by state legislatures. Even after claiming to change the majority in the New Hampshire legislature this year, they were unable to effect a reversal of marriage equality (while claiming numerous times to have the votes to do so). Based on what track record are they now asking people to part with their hard-earned? Aside from their incompetence, they have demonstrated that they are terrible stewards of donors' money.

This is a novel way for a church to "promote" Christmas

Something tells me that this would end up on AFA's "naughty" list. St. Matthew in the City is a progressive Anglican church in Aukland, NZ. According to them:

Ryan T. Anderson on How Gays Will Ruin Marriage for Everyone

Ryan T. Anderson is the editor of Public Discourse, the online journal of the Witherspoon Institute. In other words, Anderson edits an Opus Dei organ. He is also associated with the right wing Heritage Foundation.

It is reasonable to conclude that Anderson is a Catholic zealot; A modern day Knight Templar battling the forces of evil. The Pope, before he was Pope, said that homosexuals are "intrinsically disordered" and that "Marriage is holy, while homosexual acts go against the natural moral law." Anderson believes that the Pope is infallible     apparently retroactively. Therefor;

Cue is the virulently anti-gay Christianist organization led by Randy Thomasson. Think of Thomasson as kind of a West Coast version of Porno Pete. Randy has a solution for gun violence:
We must stop fooling ourselves. To protect ourselves and others in our increasingly violent society, responsible citizens must be armed at home and designated, trained individuals should be armed and ready for an intruder at school campuses and where local churches gather. More schools and local churches are using paid security and putting together a comprehensive security plan. The Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock had their men bring loaded muskets into the congregation house because they knew about possible Indian attacks. We should be as wise and as loving today.
Needless to say, more guns are not the answer     they are the problem.

Having been shot ...

As a survivor of gun violence the subject is very painful. I am in treatment for PTSD that went undiagnosed for a number of years. Over the last few days I have literally smelled cordite. But this post isn't about me and I don't have an editor. This could be a bit rambling.

Christian Preschool Expels Child of Gay Couple

Note: As a victim of gun violence, I am writing just to keep my mind off of the tragedy in Connecticut. This will likely be my last post today. I am in treatment for PTSD and today I am in a complete haze. I can smell the cordite.

According to court records in Albuquerque, New Mexico, a Christian preschool accepted a child and then booted him out when it found out that his parents are a gay male couple. The plaintiffs, a gay male couple, claim that the school, in Albuquerque, accepted their 3-year-old son this year, then sent them a denial letter.

The couple, Joseph Romero and John Keelin, have now sued Hope Christian Schools in Bernalillo County Court. They claim that the school violated New Mexico's Human Rights Act.

The allegations seem to have been confirmed by the school in a letter dated June 13, 2012 to plaintiffs' attorney. The letter indicated that the school denied admission to plaintiffs' son because plaintiffs were a same gender couple and that, as a result, their home was inconsistent with the school's beliefs.

Aside from the legalities, the sheer stupidity is appalling. What kind of threat to Christianity can a three-year-old possibly pose?

Charlie Crist Regrets Signing Anti-Gay Marriage Petition

Gov Charlie Crist signing my First Day of Issu...
Charlie Crist is only tolerable as a person because of the sanity contrast with the douche bag who currently occupies the Florida governor's mansion. How on earth we willingly handed the keys to a felon like Rick Scott will remain inexplicable for decades. But I digress.

The simple fact is that Charlie is a closeted gay man who worked against our interests for decades. Aside from having opposed marriage equality, he said that gay couples were unfit as parents when he signed a ban on same-sex adoption into law. Crist is also partially responsible for the fact that Florida citizens possess enough firepower to invade and occupy Lebanon.

Nevertheless, according to the Miami Herald:

President of Amer. Psychoanalytical Assoc. Weighs in on Conversion Therapy

The following letter to the editor appears in today's New York Times:

It is ironic that a Federal District Court judge in Sacramento wants to protect the freedom of the therapist, yet not the freedom of the patient.

California’s ban on “conversion” therapy for minors is due, in part, to the fact that it is practiced with a predetermined goal that is forced on to the patient and precludes the patient from determining his or her own sexual orientation. Telling a person that his or her sexual orientation is deviant, shameful or wrong in a therapeutic setting is not free speech; it is malpractice.

Government has a history and an interest in regulating medical and mental health practice. California’s action is part and parcel of that history and has the support of mainstream professional mental health associations. Frankly, we are puzzled that this is being viewed as a First Amendment issue.

Penny Nance has some words for President Obama

OK readers. I have been going through my batshit crazy inbox. Speaking of batshit crazy, Penny Nance is the head of the right wing Christianist lunatic fringe, anti-gay organization Concerned Women for America. Penny, it seems, was none too pleased with President Obama's first term. Now that he has been reelected     well:

NOM is in a hellish bind

Throughout the week, National Organization for Marriage has devoted a great deal of energy into assuring people that they are going to prevail at the Supreme Court. Just today, Brian Brown wrote "There is no constitutional right to redefine marriage and the Court's going to find that." Meanwhile, their chairman, John Eastman, was writing that the issue was settled by Baker v Nelson (it is not).

Uruguay Close to Equal Marriage

Uruguay's House of Representatives voted today to legalize same-sex marriage. The vote was close though; 81 - 6. The bill goes on to the Senate where it is expected to easily pass.

According to julio Bango, President Jose Mujica’s Frente Amplio Party, the law achieves;

... true equality before the law for all citizens. And it affirms that equality, since we are all diverse and we are all equal before it.

Apparently, Uruguay's Catholic Bishops share talking points with our (US) bishops. Bishop Alberto Sanquinetti said:
No union between two men or two women, no matter how stable, can be equal, because they cannot perform the conjugal act that takes place between two people of distinct corporality – man and woman – and the sexual attraction they have is not capable of procreation.
Poor thing. His whole week has been ruined!

Tony Perkins Threatens the Supreme Court With Secession?

English: American politician Tony Perkins.

This is how the Christian right BS machine works

1. Ruth Institute Blog:
Figures from Statistics Canada, a federal government agency, show 491 babies were born alive following botched abortions during the period from 2000-2009 and left to die afterwards.
2. Links to that ever reliable Lifesite News:
Figures from Statistics Canada, a federal government agency, show 491 babies were born alive following botched abortions during the period from 2000-2009 and left to die afterwards. The numbers have pro-life advocates up in arms.

Andre Schutten, legal counsel for ARPA Canada, noticed the numbers and blogged about them recently.
3. Links to Schutten's blog at Association for Reformed Political Action:
The blog Run with Life has reported that, from 2000 to 2009, 491 babies have been born alive following a failed abortion procedure, and subsequently left to die. And those are only the ones that are recorded by Statistics Canada.
4. Links to the blog Run With Life authored by one Patricia Maloney whose background is unknown:
From 2000 to 2009 in Canada, there were 491 abortions, of 20 weeks gestation and greater, that resulted in live births. This means that the aborted child died after it was born. These abortions are coded as P96.4 or "Termination of pregnancy, affecting fetus and newborn".
5. Finally a link to Statistics Canada which:

Does not mean what the blogger claims it means. Not even close. As a commenter pointed out, this includes still births. The net number is unknown and could be zero.

Apparently, nobody downstream has the intellectual curiosity of an azalea.

NOM Makes This Too Easy

National Organization for [Banning Gay] Marriage needs to find a new blog editor. This one seems to be confused. Take, for example, today's headline: Liberals Demand Obama Weigh in On Gay Marriage Legal Arguments followed by:
Obama's conveniently-timed endorsement of same-sex marriage during the campaign season is now leaving some liberals to wonder why he hasn't commented once on the issue since being reelected, not even now that the Supreme Court has decided to take up the question.

UPS drops BSA - FRC drops UPS

Oh gee. Hate group, Family Research Council has decided that they've had it with United Parcel Service:
Family Research Council (FRC) announced today that it would cease using United Parcel Service (UPS) as its primary package distributor in the wake of UPS's decision to cease funding the Boy Scouts of America because of the Scouts' longstanding policy of not accepting openly homosexual Scout leaders or members.
I still want to know;

How come they never cease using Microsoft?

Seriously. If they really have a point to make then they should apply it universally and Microsoft has donated considerable funds to marriage equality. Hell, even David Koch is for marriage equality. Just think of all the brands that they would have to boycott. Indeed, when the last time these nitwits perused the list of corporate partners of The Human Rights Campaign?

Brian Brown Should Do Himself a Favor and Stay off of TEEvee

National Organization for Marriage has an ever decreasing shelf life. With whatever years NOM has left, Mr. Brown will undoubtedly continue to demonstrate that he is not the brightest bulb in life's chandelier in addition to his lack of management expertise.

I cannot tell when this Fox interview occurred other than over the weekend. Nevertheless, it was well balanced (pointing out the Fox poll in favor of marriage equality     49%-46%). It was also neutrally moderated with a gay rights advocate appearing with Mr. Brown. According to Brown:

Reaching out with love and compassion to those attracted to Mormonism

English: Temple garments, underwear worn by me...
Whom do they think that they are fooling? In 2007, as equal marriage was gaining steam in California, the Mormons authored a pamphlet titled God Loveth His Children. The pamphlet acknowledges the reality of same-gender attractions and makes clear that it is not sinful. However, it made clear that any sexual relationship outside of a heterosexual marriage is sinful and adds that "the desire for physical gratification does not authorize immorality by anyone." This was the kinder, gentler attitude towards gay people. In other words this was part of a PR campaign.

Family Policy Institute of Washington: "this debate is not over"

Joseph Backholm, head of Family Policy Institute of Washington is not happy that gays and lesbians can legally marry in Washington. In a rambling screed via an email blast, Backholm claims that the election proved nothing. He also suggests that they might try to revoke marriage equality at the ballot in the future:
While this change in the law is unfortunate, this debate is not over. While in any election there is a winner and a loser, the outcome demonstrated that there is no consensus in Washington State regarding the purpose or definition of marriage.
The Family Policy Institute of Washington, and the millions of Washingtonians who agree that marriage is between a man and a woman will watch carefully how this law is implemented, how consequences develop, and how the landscape changes, as we know it will, particularly in light of the citizen's right of initiative.

AFA manages to DEFINE why they are a "Hate Group"

American Family Association is known for its bloviating bigots like Bryan Fischer and Buster Wilson. While much attention is paid to the likes of Fischer and Wilson, These imbeciles only exist as they do because AFA puts them on a  stage with a loud microphone.

AFA is not a hate group because of Bryan Fisher     AFA employs Bryan Fischer because they are a hate group.

Well This Ought to Piss Off NOM

As the Advocate reported, black voters in Illinois support marriage equality 60% to 16%, according to a survey released by Public Policy Polling this past Wednesday. Support is even higher among Latino voters, at 70% to 23%.

National Organization for Marriage has devoted considerable time and resources in an effort to galvanize  African-Americans and Latino citizens to oppose marriage equality. As we know, internal NOM documents revealed that they were trying to "drive a wedge between gays and blacks."

It Begins: NOM Creates Phony Victim of Equal Marriage in Maryland

With the erroneous title It Begins: Christian Wedding Vendor in Maryland Forced to Shut Down Over SSM, National Organization for Marriage is creating new victims of marriage equality. For starters, the vendor in question has not     and is not forced to     "shut down." NOM goes on to quote an unnamed source without a link:

Not Surprisingly, Gary Randall is VERY Upset Today

Gary Randall is the shady anti-gay Oregon pastor who seems to have made a living by running anti-equality campaigns in Washington State. Randall used to have a Portland, OR TV show but has been off the air for more than 20 years. Today, Randall writes about Washington marriage equality:

ADF: Five reasons gays should not be allowed to marry

Alliance Defending Freedom has posted 5 Reasons Why Marriage Still Matters to You. shall we tiptoe though the turds together? Why not?

1. Marriage as defined by God has not changed.

This is not a religious issue. Get that through your thick heads. This is an issue of equal protection under the law. That pesky Establishment Clause is still part of the US Constitution, last time I checked.

NOM and the Swift Boat History of Their PR Firm

Today, National Organization for Marriage called Judge Vaughn Walker a "rogue judge ...  who himself was engaged in a long-term homosexual relationship." This is the handiwork of NOM's PR firm, CRC Public Relations which has represented NOM since their inception. CRC is known as the attack dog of conservative causes.

While CRC likes to remain in the shadows, they are the firm that represented "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth," a group of Navy veterans who launched a disgraceful and dishonest political attack against the war record of John Kerry to thwart his bid for the White House in 2004. Kerry is the recipient of a Bronze Star, Silver Star and three Purple Hearts.

Tony Perkins has cold water to throw on loving newlyweds

English: American politician Tony Perkins.
Poor Tony Perkins, head of hate group Family Research Council. Perkins is the natural successor to Anita Bryant in the sense that all of the rhetoric is there along with the complete disdain for facts, science and anything else that Perkins finds inconvenient. He has had to watch as LGBT Americans are getting closer and closer to equal protection under the law. It's killing him.

NOM asking for more money - again

So what exactly is Brian Brown's important announcement with a pretentious graphic from National Organization for Marriage?
Please re-commit yourself now as the year comes to a close, and stand alongside NOM in this fight today with your year-end gift of $25, $50, $100 or more. Together, we can face down the forces arrayed against us, trying to impose their radical same-sex marriage agenda on the entire country.
Hopefully, in the near future, Mr. Brown will need a new hobby. They have been the beneficiaries of some very large (presumably religiously aligned) donations. Presumably even those dollars dry up as the notion of inevitability begins to sink in.

Rep. Mike Fleck: Nobody I know has been successful at changing their sexual orientation

Republican Pennsylvania State Representative Mike Fleck is a moderate Republican and devout Christian. He is also an Eagle Scout and a graduate of Liberty University. Last Saturday, Fleck confirmed that he is gay making him the only sitting gay Republican state representative in the United States. Fleck and his wife of ten years divorced a year ago. They have no children.

Fleck has voiced some important perspectives on so-called reparative therapy:

On his own, Brian Brown displays his ineptitude

As I have written before, none of the people associated with National Organization for Marriage have ever worked for anyone before. When they are apart from their lawyers and PR consultants, these folks are bewildered. They are just not terribly bright.

Brian Brown was on the Mike Huckabee Show last week. According to Brown:

Prop 8 Case Redistributed for December 7

The Supreme Court will hopefully determine the status of the Proposition 8 case this Friday. To be determined is whether or not the Court will choose to hear this case.

Nevada Decision Was Completely Expected

Nevada ImagesAs I wrote on November 8, the objective in Sevcik v. Sandoval (challenging Nevada's marriage amendment) was to get the case to the friendlier 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. The matter was before Judge Robert Clive Jones of the United States District Court for Nevada. Judge Jones has served as a Mormon bishop and was appointed by GW Bush. He had been openly critical of Judge Vaughn Walker's decision in the Proposition 8 case and skeptical of the plaintiffs' arguments in this case. His decision in opposition to marriage equality was nearly a foregone conclusion.
