On its kids' site Focus on the Family Christianizes "The Lorax"

Cover of "The Lorax (Classic Seuss)"
In case you did not know, Focus on the Family has a website for kids at . Most of it is pretty harmless stuff. Then there is this gem:

At the very end of the film, when the Once-ler drops the last Truffula tree seed into Ted's hands, he says, "It's not what it is. It's about what it can become." It's important for us to protect the Earth and all of God’s creation, but we must not value trees and plants above human life. As it says in Genesis 1:26, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule . . . all the earth.”

Maggie Gallagher: "Moi?"

On Thomas Roberts' show this morning, Maggie said that she was unhappy with some of the language in the embarrassing National Organization for Marriage's newly uncovered  confidential strategy memorandum. The implication was that it lacked her "adult supervision."

That's interesting because the memorandum was dated December 15, 2009     at a time when Maggie was still president of NOM. Brian Brown is the contact on the memorandum as "Executive Director." I also note that, unlike Gallagher, Brown was not an officer of NOM at that time according to the tax return.

Ms. Gallagher would have us believe that a key document, "National Strategy for Winning the Marriage Battle," was authored and presented to donors and others without her knowledge or approval of the contents.

NOM's Roster of Hapless Mediocrity

Where does National Organization for Marriage get these people? Seriously. Keep in mind that it was not NOM that obtained victories on Proposition 8 and Question 1 in California and Maine respectively. Rather, it was the campaign manager, Frank Schubert from Schubert Flint Public Relations. In fact, NOM uses at last four different imaging firms. Given that NOM receives about 90% of its revenues from five donors (presumably the result of efforts by Robert George and Maggie Gallagher), they are not very effective at raising money. NOM's 2010 payroll and benefits totaled $1.2 million which is roughly equal to the year's budget deficit.

Priest Cites “Wretched History” of the Papacy Resisting Secular Culture

Fr. Anthony Ruff,  Associate Professor of Theology at Saint John’s University in Minnesota, has an interesting piece in his blog     Pray Tell. If you scroll down the comments, Father Ruff adds the following (emphasis added):

Could They Lose the Nazi References? Pretty Please.

I'm not much of a Jew. Although I was bar mitzvahed, I usually consider myself agnostic; sometimes an atheist. While the exact details are sketchy, a chunk of my family was annihilated in the holocaust by bullets. Others, who made their way to France, perished as a result of the Vel' d'Hiv roundup.

Maggie a No-Show on Thomas Roberts Show

Although confirmed an hour prior to her scheduled interview with Thomas Roberts from Seattle, Maggie Gallagher was a no-show for the 11:30 EDT discussion. Mr. Roberts was content to discuss National Organization for Marriage's scandalous and involuntary disclosures with Wayne Besen, head of Truth Wins Out.

[Video] Our favorite Minnesota Marriage Twinkie is at it Again

This time Kalley Yanta draws some absurd conclusions about the economic effects of marriage equality and the consequences of anti-gay referenda. Through selective observation and the intentional confusion of causation and correlation, she makes the preposterous claim (actually regurgitating a NOM talking point) that inequality is somehow good for the economy. These are the facts:

OK Pete, I'll Explain the Difference

I usually manage to ignore Mr. LaBarbera for a month or two at a time. He is a sociopath who thrives on negative attention. His pathology is nearly identical to the cretins from Westboro Baptist Church. I won't link to his hate site, but Mr. LaBarbera is making a false equivalency between Dan Savage and Rush Limbaugh:

NOM: Some of our best friends are black

Unless you live under a rock you know that a confidential National Organization for Marriage document explicitly includes, as a strategy, driving a wedge between blacks and gays. The document, by the way, would have never seen the light of day if NOM complied with campaign finance disclosure laws in the state of Maine. Brown responds today:
The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) was formed in 2007 and has worked extensively with supporters of traditional marriage from every color, creed and background. We have worked with prominent African-American and Hispanic leaders, including Dr. Alveda C. King, Bishop George McKinney of the COGIC Church, Bishop Harry Jackson and the New York State Senator Reverend Rubén Díaz Sr., all of whom share our concern about protecting marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

Gay marriage advocates have attempted to portray same-sex marriage as a civil right, but the voices of these and many other leaders have provided powerful witness that this claim is patently false. Gay marriage is not a civil right, and we will continue to point this out in written materials such as those released in Maine. We proudly bring together people of different races, creeds and colors to fight for our most fundamental institution: marriage.
Brown is confirming and repeating the strategy that was unearthed in the document!

By claiming that marriage equality is not a civil right he is is implying " . . . unlike you black people whose equality is a civil right." Nice try.

Re: "Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse on Why Being Pro-Marriage is Not Anti-Gay"

First, Let's get rid of the semantics. Morse is not "pro-marriage." Nor is she "defending marriage." Morse is an advocate of banning same-sex marriage. Therefore, the question becomes:

Is the desire to ban same-sex marriage anti-gay per se?

Speaking of Absurdities - There is Always ADF

I received an email over the weekend from one  Lawrence (Larry) Gratton who does not disclose his affiliation. Given that he is writing to encourage more church participation in circulating petitions for Washington's Referendum 74 (which would prevent Washington's marriage equality law from taking effect), it is reasonable to conclude that Mr. or Rev. Gratton is associated with the anti-equality crowd. Gratton includes a document from Alliance Defense Fund which reads in part (emphasis added):

Dear Pastor:

I write to encourage you and your church to support the referendum protecting traditional marriage in Washington.
 . . .
But it is not enough to simply acknowledge that churches are legally allowed to support the marriage referendum. Every church in Washington should stand to support the referendum.

Churches must lead the charge on this issue as they led the charge in the past on the great moral issues of history such as independence, slavery, women's suffrage, ending child labor, and civil rights. Churches and pastors have always been at the forefront of the great moral issues confronting our culture. They have never been afraid to stand for righteousness and to urge morality in culture. And today should be no different.

Really? Christians used the Bible to support slavery and segregation with the certainty that God intended the races to be separated. Moreover, they have been     and continue to be     in the "forefront" of institutionalized misogyny. Were they actually supportive of "civil rights" that would include those of LGBT citizens.

Why is NOM Afraid of Microsoft?

National Organization for Marriage seems to be all Starbucks     all the time. Since last Wednesday, their blog has included no fewer than 18 articles about their Starbucks campaign. It has become an obsession. Indeed, it is comical to watch these religious zealots who actually think that they can reshape the pro-equality policies of a private company.

Starbucks is not the only company headquartered in Washington that champions equality and diversity. Others include Microsoft, Nike, RealNetworks and Vulcan. Microsoft has sales of $70 billion per year. Starbucks is "only" a fifth that size.

The Minnesota Marriage Twinkie on Procreation

Here we go again. Another idiotic Minnesota Bigotry Minute from our lovable, very white Christian     Kalley Yanta. This time, the procreation argument is about "intent." Kalley also reminds us that procreation is essential for civilization to "flourish." I used to think that, at some point, embarrassment would prevail and they would cease making these ludicrous arguments as substitutes for a religious objection. I was wrong. That day will never come. At the risk of stating the obvious:
  • There are many couples who marry who intend never to have children.
  • Having children is not a legal requirement for marriage.
  • Every gay in America can be married to another gay and that will not change, by so much as one child, the number of kids that heterosexual couples crank out.

National Organization for Marriage is unhingedly obsessed over Starbucks. Maggie Gallagher and Jonathan Baker spent plenty of NOM's money to attend Starbucks' annual shareholders meeting as a proxy for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. And what did they get? SMACKDOWN! By now you probably know that Baker complained about Starbucks' support of marriage equality. Starbucks' CEO said that their support was a very easy decision to make and one that was consistent with their core values as a company. Shareholders cheered. Baker was thoroughly over-matched.

Marriage Equality Effort Attracts a Novel Group of Donors

This article must scare the living crap out of the National Organization for Marriage folks and the bishops. The equality movement is attracting a diverse group of donors; gay and straight; Republican and Democrat. Some are from the entertainment industry; Others from Wall Street.
LOS ANGELES — On a warm Friday afternoon three years ago, Rob Reiner, the director, arrived for lunch at the Beverly Hills estate of David Geffen, the entertainment mogul. Mr. Reiner and his political adviser, Chad H. Griffin, had spent six months drafting an ambitious legal campaign aimed at persuading the United States Supreme Court to establish a constitutional right of same-sex marriage.

Who is Thomas Strobhar?

Thomas Strobhar was the second person to ask about marriage equality at the Starbucks' shareholders meeting. The first, of course, was NOM's guy     Jonathan Baker. Mr. Strobhar, who probably owns all of one share, intimated the threat of a boycott. Strobhar's question was embarrassingly greeted with the applause generated by two or three people.  He received a response similar to the one that Baker received which was followed by the vigorous applause of the other shareholders.

Mr. Brown Desperately Needs Some Sort of Victory

National Organization for Marriage is not very good at many things. Among these are:
  1. Complying with campaign disclosure laws and;
  2. Factually conveying information.
Such is the case when it comes to New York's special elections last Tuesday. NOM PAC NY (ID A47055) has failed to file 32 day and 11 day disclosure reports for the 2012 special election and they bundled the individual contributors in the January disclosures which is prohibited. One would think that an organization that exists to influence laws would obey those that do exist.

NOM Unglued

Uh boy. the bishops must be pissed because National Organization for Marriage just updated their Starbucks fatwa. Behold the first paragraph (emphasis added):
We are urging consumers across the globe to "Dump Starbucks" because the massive international corporation has taken a corporate-wide position that marriage between one man and one woman should be eliminated and that same-sex marriage should become the norm.
OK Brian. I know that you and Maggie are having a real bad day.  But did you really intend to say that? Do you think that anyone would believe that Starbucks is advocating for the elimination of "traditional" marriage? That is what your little press release says.

You folks better buy or find some anchors. It would seem that many more very bad days for NOM are on the way. Perhaps you need a new hobby. Meanwhile Starbucks doesn't give a rat's ass about your little hate group.

What Brian Brown will NEVER understand

Allow me to step into the wayback machine and return to my W.E. Deming days. Starbucks is a successful organization primarily because it is committed to a quality culture. There are many components to a quality culture. However, at its core is the determination of the work force to be a quality organization that engenders the corporate culture.

WTF: The Question Unasked

The Advocate reports:
Two Men Arrested for Sex on Gay Cruise
By Josh Hinkle

Two American men were arrested Wednesday for allegedly having sex on a gay Caribbean cruise.

The cruise ship was docked in Dominica, where it is illegal for two men to have sex. The Police Constable of Dominica John George told the the Associated Press that John Hart (no relation) and Dennis Mayer were arrested after being spotted having sex on the ship by someone on the dock. They have been charged with indecent exposure and will appear before a magistrate Thursday morning.

If convicted the men could face a $370 fine and up to six months in jail.
Why the fuck is a gay cruise making a call at a bigoted port? There are plenty of perfectly lovely places that are welcoming.

Mr. Vander Plaats and Mr. Brown

Iowa is now in its fourth year of marriage equality and its fourth year of anti-gay groups trying to overturn marriage equality because of religious objections. Noticeably absent from their arguments are Iowans who have suffered at the hands of evil gays because they were allowed to marry. Oh, the horror of it all. Where are all the victims?

NOM thoroughly earned this meshuggeneh tsuris

As usual, NOM is delinquent on required campaign finance disclosures. By the end of January, National Organization for Marriage pumped about $20,000 in support of GOPer David Storobin who opposes Democrat Lew Fidler for the New York State Senate seat once held by the disgraced Carl Kruger.  The special election is today. Such a mess! Such a mess!

The manufacture and assembly of a pointless controversy

The usual suspects are at it again in Iowa. As proxies for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, NOM et al are trying to get a state constitutional amendment passed in order to ban same-sex marriage and reverse marriage equality. To do so, a resolution must pass the House and Senate in exactly the same language in two consecutive General Assemblies before the ballot issue could come before voters.  They have yet to get it through once. I ask the usual question:

Michael Brown - Still batshit after all these years

Trying to find Michael Brown's most offensive quote at GLAAD-CAP is a considerable challenge. Furthermore, the GLAAD summary is already out of date. Sharks must continually swim and Michael Brown must continually spew homo-hate to live. Also, Mr. Brown has written several books including a nonsensical tome titled A Queer Thing Happened to America. Quotes from his books do not seem to be included on his GLAAD-CAP page. To be perfectly candid, I would not be inclined to volunteer to read Brown's output to provide GLAAD with input.

Has NOM suffered irreparable damage due to their New Hampshire misadventures?

NOM, as proxy for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, is feverishly working to repeal marriage equality in New Hampshire. In January, NOM breathlessly announced that a vote was forthcoming on February 1. Now, if they want to accomplish this in the current legislative session, they must pass a repeal by March 29. NOM hasn't bothered to explain why marriage equality must be repealed after three years.

Before NOM Links to an Article by Selwyn Duke . . .

Perhaps they should first know that the nitwit is a birther. As recently as March 14, 2012, this genius opined:
You don't present a forged a document for no reason. Again, the undeniable, irrefutable fact here is that there is smoke. And we need to find out what is feeding the fire.

Remember, too, that document forgery is a crime. If you were found benefiting yourself through it, you'd be prosecuted. Should the president be held to a lower standard?
So when Mr. Duke writes a polemic titled How to Win the Marriage Debate, perhaps someone at NOM should demonstrate enough intellectual curiosity to find out who this guy is. However, this is illustrative of anti-equality proponents. A lack of intellectual curiosity and critical thinking on the part of both Mr. Duke and National Organization for Marriage's staff. Shocking, I know.

The full range of Duke's misogyny, racism, homophobia and anti-intellectualism is in full bloom here.

One Day of Child Abuse

In addition to their anti-gay zeal, our oppressors are also guilty of widespread child abuse that is so pernicious and perverse that it may have lifelong adverse effects. Bill Keller: Maddow's to Blame and He has Cured Thousands of Homosexuality

Pastors like Keller clearly have a constituency that is not exactly comprised of the most intellectually curious people in the world. Nor, for that matter are they great critical thinkers. These preachers depend on ignorant rubes to foolishly send them their hard earned money. According to Christian Newswire:
Bill Keller, the world's leading Internet Evangelist . . . says Anderson Cooper, Rachel Maddow, Ellen DeGeneres, the media, and gutless pastors are guilty for the death of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi, not Dharun Ravi!
. . .
The fact is, suicide is exponentially higher amongst those who choose the homosexual lifestyle, and while those in the media want to blame people like myself who take a Biblical stand on this issue, the fact is, they are the ones most responsible!
. . .
Over the past 20 years, Liveprayer has helped thousands of men and women make the choice to turn from the sin of homosexuality. Keller says, "Homosexuality is a bondage like alcohol, drugs, gambling, or anything else people get addicted to. The great lie the homosexual community has successfully sold is that people are 'born gay.' There is absolutely ZERO legitimate studies to support this claim. People are born with black skin or white skin, with blue eyes or green eyes, taking off your pants to have sex is a CHOICE!"
Sure Bill. Sure.

We finance our own oppression

I wrote yesterday of the Bishop of Providence Rhode Island (Thomas J. Tobin) and his dishonest arguments for marriage inequality. It seems appropriate and important to remind people just how much we contribute to the support of those who oppress us:

Thursday, March 15, 2012

Bishop Thomas J. Tobin has five problems - Maybe more

Rhode Island Roman Catholic Bishop , Thomas J. Tobin emerged from his manse to opine that he is in a lather over "homosexual marriage." These days, each member of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops is trying to outdo their peers in a) gay hate and; b) the zeal to impose their religious views on civil law. Bishop Tom has five problems with marriage equality:

So who voted against Michael Walter Fitzgerald?

Today, Michael Walter Fitzgerald was confirmed to be a United States District Judge on the United States District Court for the Central District of California by a vote of 91 to 6. He is President Obama's fourth openly gay nominee for a federal judgeship. By any reasonable standard, Judge Fitzgerald is eminently qualified for the federal bench.

So who are the six US Senators who voted against this nomination? You probably already know:

Scott Lively at the Border of Free Speech

Scott Lively
Yesterday, under the Alien Tort Statute, the Center for Constitutional Rights filed a federal lawsuit against Abiding Truth Ministries President Scott Lively on behalf of Sexual Minorities Uganda, a non-profit umbrella organization for LGBT advocacy groups in Uganda. The suit alleges that Lively’s involvement in anti-gay efforts in Uganda, including his active participation in the formulation of anti-gay legislation and policies aimed at revoking fundamental rights from LGBT persons constitutes persecution (legal filing after the jump).

NOM does NOTHING without some deception

According to National Organization for marriage they are anxious to work "alongside Preserve Marriage Washington." The problem is that NOM plus a few loose wingnuts are Preserve Marriage Washington. See the whois data below the quote. For an auxiliary of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops you would think that they would at least try to be less deceptive.

Minnesota marriage equality has an imaginary friend?

According to inequality advocate, John Helmberger, that seems to be the case:

Dear Friends,

I am writing you today because liberal opponents of traditional marriage have announced that a major - George Soros - like donor will match all donations up to $200,000 to defeat the Minnesota Marriage Protection Amendment.

Donald Trump's Spoiled Brats

These are Trump's sons, Eric and Donald Junior. It takes a real man to shoot vulnerable animals with big guns (H/T Salon).

I am really not surprised. After all, Donnie Trump would be putting chocolate on cherries for a living were it not for his mafia-connected late father, Fred. Donnie should put his kids to work hunting birth certificates or something equally purposeful. The fact that these cretins would put this photo on the web is testament to how spectacularly out of touch they are.

NOM's Brian Brown Increasingly Unhinged

If you believe Brown, Tim Gill somehow rigged the New Hampshire legislature to vote for marriage equality in 2009. Exactly how he accomplished that feat remains unknown.

Now Brian Brown, who is nothing but a proxy for the US Conference of Roman Catholic Bishops wants the Church to be able to determine the rights of citizens.

Washington State Ref 74 Ballot Language

A judge has now determined the language for the anti-gay Referendum 74 in Washington State. The objective of the referendum is to prevent legislatively approved marriage equality from becoming effective. Anti-equality forces have until June 6 to provide about 120,000 valid signatures. This requires submitting about 150,000 signatures.

The concise description:

This bill would allow same-sex couples to marry, preserve domestic partnerships only for seniors, and preserve the right of clergy or religious organizations to refuse to perform, recognize, or accommodate any marriage ceremony.
The ballot-measure summary:

VCY: 'Violent Verses in the Qur'an'

According to VCY America (Voice of Christian Youth), Islam is a violent cult. VCY, which also bills itself as Christian Information Radio, claims:
Islam is promoted as being a "religion of peace".  But when the teachings of their "holy" book, the Qur'an, are examined, there is much more teaching of violence, including the killing and maiming of those who do not submit to the worldview

Orthodox Church Sides With Russian Cities Banning 'Homosexual Propaganda'

It looks like Russians are becoming as ignorant as an Alabama evangelical fundamentalist.
Gay minorities in Russia claim they are being unfairly targeted after a law was signed last week that seeks to punish anyone "making public actions among minors for the propaganda of homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality or transgenderism (LGBT)," and which the Orthodox Church supports.
Ugh! Read the rest at the Christian Post.

What's at stake in North Carolina?

Voters will go to the polls in North Carolina on May 8 to vote for or against Amendment One to the state constitution.

Updated with latest NOM video.
[ ] FOR               [ ] AGAINST
Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.
While we are ahead in the polls, those measurements have been very volatile and NOM has not yet engaged in a full court press. National Organization for Marriage will soon be telling the electorate that gays are evil people who pose a threat to children. That is an argument that persuaded voters in California and Maine to vote against equality. The fact that the vote on this measure coincides with the Republican primary is just coincidence of course.  Obviously, if the GOP presidential nomination is still in play     which appears to be a good probability     there would be a considerable turnout by evangelicals in support of Mr. Frothy Mix. Indeed, all three Republican candidates will campaigning in support of this referendum. Romney hasn't the balls to oppose it.

Sign up to watch the Obama documentary premier on March 15

Check out the trailer (if you recognize the narrator's voice     that's Tom Hanks), and sign up to watch the premiere on Thursday, March 15th:

The Homeless LGBT Youth Challenge

Laura A. Hughes took to the pages of the Huffington Post to explain the difficulties of working with homeless gay kids. Laura is the executive director of the Ruth Ellis Center in Highland Park, Michigan.
How great a challenge? The numbers are stark: 40 percent of the youth we serve self-report being HIV-positive. Many are functionally illiterate. A large percentage are 18- to 21-year-old youth who have aged out of the foster care system, which, statistically, makes them subject to additional risks: one in four will be incarcerated within two years of exiting the foster system; 42 percent will lack a high school diploma by age 19, compared with 13 percent nationally; and they are far less likely to earn college degrees.
The Ruth Ellis Center, serving Detroit Metro, can barely make a dent in this problem. The problem is not so much the homeless children as it is the ignorant parents who kick them out when they come out and make the homeless in the first place.  Imbecility like this should be going on in Saudi Arabia     not in the United States of America. Just how uncivilized are we?

How we treat our most vulnerable citizens defines our culture.

New raft of gay killings in Iraq

A recent spate of killings and intimidation aimed at gay Iraqis and teenagers who dress in brash Western fashions is sending waves of fear through Iraq’s secular circles while casting doubt on the government’s will to protect some of its most vulnerable citizens.

Many details of what Iraqi newspapers have called the “emo killings” are murky, but the uproar comes at an awkward moment for Iraq. The country has been preparing to showcase itself to the world as host of a high-profile meeting of Arab leaders in late March, the first major diplomatic event here since American forces withdrew in December. NOM Continues to Flout Campaign Finance Laws Nationally

This is just a heads up. I am still reviewing documents and waiting for the next New York disclosure filing.  As most of you know, National Organization is meddling in several New York electoral races, trying to punish people for their legislative votes for marriage equality. Anti-gay hyperbole of the day

This bit of wisdom published on Christian News Wire today:
It is a sad day for our nation when basic reason and sanity are considered controversial or even 'hateful.' Those who attack marriage and its defenders would have us believe that the wreckage caused by divorce, out of wedlock births, and sexual promiscuity are somehow good for the nation.

Strident Church Opposition to Marriage Equality in Maine?

According to Catholic News Agency,  some media outlets have misconstrued a pastoral letter on marriage from Portland Bishop Richard Malone.  Some took the letter as an indication that the Church would not actively oppose the 2012 ballot question to legalize same-sex marriage.

According to Brian Souchet, director of the Diocese of Portland’s Office for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage :

The Pope's Talking Points

For hundreds of years, the Catholic church operated as a pretension of European aristocracy. Kings, princes and dukes were replaced with popes, cardinals and bishops in the Church's parallel universe. At times, and in some realms, there was a power (and wealth) sharing arrangement between church and state.

Those days are gone. The few remaining European monarchs have little or no power.  Yet, the Catholic Church is still conducting affairs as if we, and they, were living in the thirteenth

ADF: Pray Gay Marriage Away Day After Party

The Alliance Defense Fund wants more prayer a week after "Pray for Marriage Day." Apparently, they feel that the set aside day was insufficient. Accompanying their polemic, titled Changing Marriage Changes Everything, is a prayer sheet (PDF). After all, you might not know what to pray for.  It reads more like the talking points derived from National Organization for Marriage meets Family Research Council. One would think that a few gays getting hitched will prevent heteros from ever getting married again. For example:

California: Significant Increase in Approval of Marriage Equality

A March poll (PDF) conducted by Public Policy Institute of California on numerous issues shows a considerable increase in approval of same-sex marriage.
A number of social issues are being debated this election year. Californians’ views have undergone a marked shift on one issue: same-sex marriage. Today, 56 percent of likely voters favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to legally marry—up from 47 percent in October 2008, just before voters passed Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. Among registered voters, majorities of Democrats (72%) and independents (56%) today favor legalizing same-sex marriage. Most Republicans (61%) are opposed. Support has grown in most political and demographic groups since October 2008. It is up 16 points among Democrats (56% to 72%), 11 points among Republicans (23% to 34%), and is similar among independents (53% to 56%). Support is up 10 points among Latinos (36% to 46%) and 7 points among whites (50% to 57%). Across age groups, support grew 10 points among those age 18–34 (53% to 63%), 13 points among those 55 and older (34% to 47%), and is similar among those age 35–54 (45% to 48%). Among evangelical Christians, support increased 15 points (21% to 36%).

Cardinal Newman Society's Anti-Gay Campaign

According to them, the mission of The Cardinal Newman Society is to help renew and strengthen Catholic identity in Catholic higher education. Apparently, that excludes gay students who are to be marginalized on campus. There is enough hyperbole in this missive to make Donald Trump self-conscious. You would think, from this email, that heterosexuals will no longer be able to marry if gays can marry. Seriously.  Just read the first paragraph (emphasis added).

Peter Sprigg's Expanding Distance from Truth

Peter Sprigg
Peter Sprigg is not a happy fundamentalist. Montgomery County, Maryland Public Schools Superintendent, Joshua Starr, called a PFOX brochure "reprehensible," "deplorable" and "disgusting."

At FRC, Sprigg has the pretentious academic title of Senior Fellow for Policy Studies. Sprigg is a Baptist minister with an undergraduate degree in political science and economics. He also has a master of divinity degree. What he is certainly not is a scholar nor expert on sexual orientation. Sprigg's "contributions" are one of the reasons that Family Research Council is designated a hate group by the SPLC. But I digress.

Kirk Cameron Now Claims to Have Gay Friends. Seriously?

Has been child actor, Kirk Cameron, issued a statement today with the usual Chirstianist blather.  Now Mr.Cameron can return to obscurity and irrelevance.

Brian Brown fancies himself as David - - - vs.Goliath

National Organization for Marriage's Brian Brown may have his intellectual shortcomings but lacks nothing in paranoia and hubris. He seems to forget that it is the LGBT community that is the minority group. In spite of common sense, Brown and NOM decided to pick a fight in North Carolina to orchestrate an amendment to the state's constitution that outlaws marriage equality and civil unions. The problem with all this is, well, as the Charlotte Observer put it:

Brian Brown on Messaging

I noticed this little blurb on National Organization of Marriage's blog.

Our President Brian Brown, meanwhile, explains why NOM has never had to change its message:
Our messaging hasn't changed because it's based on truth and reality," said Brian S. Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage. "It's not that complicated. You don't need sophisticated talking points to present a common-sense truth.

An open email to Dr. Trayce Hansen

Dr. T. Hansen
Today, National Organization for Marriage is referencing a polemic by Dr. Trayce Hansen titled Love Isn’t Enough: 5 Reasons Why Same-Sex Marriage Will Harm Children. Dr. Hansen originally wrote this in 2007.

Updated to include court record.

Other works by Hansen include:

Brian Brown needs a civics lesson

In his zeal to do the bidding of his Church's bishops, Brian Brown seems to think that the first allegiance of elected officials is to Brown's National Organization for Marriage. Mr. Brown openly expects elected officials to favor the church and a special interest group over the best interests of their constituents. Not only is that not good government, it's an insult to the Establishment Clause.

The strange anti-gay world of Doug Mainwaring

If Doug Mainwaring really is gay (and I am not sure)     he is crazy. While you may not remember the name, you may recall that some gay guy testified before the Maryland Senate judiciary Committee in opposition to marriage equality. Not surprisingly, he has become NOM's new shiny object.

Claiming that marriage equality has been "hijacked by politicians," Mr. Mainwaring has written     in a Tea Party blog:
