Marco Rubio responds on DOMA

I wrote a constituent email to Senator Marco Rubio inquiring what his position on DOMA is. Not surprisingly, this is the boilerplate that his staff sent in reply:

While I respect the rights of all individuals, I believe marriage to be a divine institution where a man and woman resolve with mutual love and respect to live together as husband and wife, and must adhere to applicable laws and conform to civil ceremonies that may be required. As a United States Senator, I will work to defend Acts of Congress and preserve the legal definition of marriage.

This is pretty standard GOPer demagoguery. The obvious problems are:

1. Rubio does not "respect the rights of all individuals" if he does not respect their right to marry the person of their choice.
2. Our Constitution is specific and unambiguous about "divine institutions." Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ...
3. Ultimately, he claims that he will defend an act of Congress which, by his own constructs, he should know is unconstitutional.

On a more personal note, it has been my observation that the Cuban-American community is highly supportive of rights for LGBT individuals. Traditionally, they have been Republicans since JFK's misadventure at the Bay of Pigs and because Cubans generally agreed that Republicans were more anti-communist than Democrats. This slice of the electorate is increasingly up for grabs.
