The FBI has just released some startling information. Based on statistical modeling, millions of records are missing from the national database of prohibited purchasers. The shooter at Virginia Tech was a prohibited purchaser under the law, but he was able to buy the guns he used to kill 32 people because his mental health record was never submitted to the national database.
The gap is probably not what you think in that it seems to be unrelated to ideology. For example, Texas is one of the states in close compliance. On the other hand, my home state of Florida has submitted 45,000 mental health records; 112,000 are missing. Louisiana has submitted exactly one mental health record; 38,000 are missing.
