The Grand Poobah Speaks

I am referring, of course, to Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus. For the record, the Knights of Columbus is a for-profit insurance company masquerading as a Catholic fraternal organization. It has revenues of close to $2 billion annually. In 2010 Anderson was paid $1.2 million. But I digress.

Anderson is in Miami this evening addressing a national Catholic Latino group at a church. According to Anderson:
  • Catholics should work to ensure that future generations of immigrants find a country that supports their values and not one that asks them to surrender their religious values at the border as the price of their admission. Politicians’ support for immigration reform, in his view, is not enough to justify a vote for them if they also advocate policies at odds with core Catholic beliefs.
He might as well just come out and say that, according to the Church, they should vote for Romney.  Moreover, his argument is intellectually dishonest. He is begging the question by asking his audience to assume the false proposition that immigrants are asked to compromise their religious beliefs. No matter how many times he or Dolan repeat this false nonsense, it remains a lie and one that is increasingly irritating to people capable of critical thinking. Moreover, making contraceptives available to people who cannot otherwise afford them leaves the decision up to the individual; Not the government and not their employer and certainly not Mr. Anderson or Cardinal Dolan. It gives those same immigrants freedom of choice which is true freedom.

The increase in tension is the result of an ultra-conservative Pope. He believes that he is commanded by God to intervene in our policies and politics.  He, Dolan and Anderson fail to realize that true religious freedom is the product of the Establishment Clause     the separation of church and state.
