NOM's not so high pitched dog whistle on adoption

Our friends at National Organization for Marriage cannot help themselves. When NOM says that "every child deserves a mommy and daddy" what they are really saying goes beyond advocating for marriage inequality. They want to eliminate adoption and child custody by gay people. As usual for NOM, this originates with a papal pronouncement. In NOM's world, the Pope is infallible and his utterances are the word of God. Ultimately, NOM wants U.S. law to reflect the edicts of the last remaining absolute monarch in Europe. Then there's that pesky Establishment Clause.

"Allowing children to be adopted by persons living in such unions would actually mean doing violence to these children"

According to the Pope:
As experience has shown, the absence of sexual complementarity in these unions creates obstacles in the normal development of children who would be placed in the care of such persons. They would be deprived of the experience of either fatherhood or motherhood. Allowing children to be adopted by persons living in such unions would actually mean doing violence to these children, in the sense that their condition of dependency would be used to place them in an environment that is not conducive to their full human development. This is gravely immoral and in open contradiction to the principle, recognized also in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, that the best interests of the child, as the weaker and more vulnerable party, are to be the paramount consideration in every case.
Violence? Where on earth does this guy get these ideas from? As we all know, children raised by gay couples thrive. With respect to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, I would first note that the Vatican issued what amounts to a signing statement. The Holy See objects, for example, to 24.2.f: [state parties shall take appropriate measures] To develop preventive health care, guidance for parents and family planning education and services.

More importantly, the Pope assumes that adoption by gay parties or couples is not in the best interests of the child per se. That is stunningly incorrect and out of touch with the real world.  We need to stay vigilant. The Regnerus study (funded ultimately by Opus Dei) has an agenda that goes beyond marriage equality.
