Gay Douglas Mainwaring has to be the biggest schmuck in Christendom

Doug Mainwaring, is a Tea Partier and openly gay man. He is also married (to a woman) and has children. Apparently, he does not engage in gay sex due to his conservative Catholic convictions. He is proud to say, "I'm gay and I oppose same-sex marriage." Well good for him. At least he admits that there is such a thing as a gay person. That's progress.

The reason that Mainwaring is opposed to marriage equality is because, according to him, "kids need a mom and a dad." Of course the real reason that Mainwaring is opposed to marriage equality is because he is a conservative Catholic. He prefers to invent secular justifications. Did Mainwaring think that, by getting married, he would cure the gay? Mr. Mainwaring is a dishonest guy. Aside from the nonsense about same-sex marriage, he entered into a marriage dishonestly. Furthermore, if he opts not to enter into a same-sex marriage, that's his choice.

Over the past year or so, Mainwaring has been showing up at hearings to oppose marriage equality. He made an appearance in Illinois over the last couple of weeks. He is becoming a professional gay-opposing-equality. He seems not to care that he has become a tool for hate groups that would go so far as to criminalize homosexuality if they could. So let us review.

Some gay couples adopt children:

These are children with no mom and no dad. Gay couples have been adopting children without the ability to marry for decades. If a gay couple has children, those kids would be better off with married parents. So, were this really about kids then marriage equality makes perfect sense.

The simple fact is that gays are going to pair and have children regardless of the state of marriage equality. Moreover, there is a large body of research that tells us that gay people are good parents.

Some lesbian couples use artificial insemination:

Some people question the morality of artificial insemination. I would point out that this technique is also used by single women and heterosexual married women. In any event, I have seen no research that correlates the increased use of AI with marriage equality.

A very few gay men conceive children through surrogacy:

The numbers are small because of the financial costs and legal risks. Whatever moral concerns people have about surrogacy, they would exist for heterosexuals as well. Again, there is no research that correlates the technique to marriage equality.

Some gays and lesbians have children from a prior marriage:

Mr. Mainwaring is not the only person on the planet who has entered into a sham marriage. Perhaps, with increasing equality, these things will be a thing of the past.

Speaking of dishonesty, there is Andrew T. Walker. Mr. Walker is a staff writer for the Heritage Foundation. According to him:
The media likes to present the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community as if they speak with one voice, as a monolithic group. But more and more members of that community are speaking out in defense of marriage—between a man and woman.
"More and more members of that community?" Seriously? There are roughly 15 million to 20 million gays and lesbians in the United States and they seem to have found one guy to oppose marriage equality. Where is this "more and more?"
