Blowhard alert: 'Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison'

Blowhard
The President of the Lutheran Church     Missouri Synod, Matthew C. Harrison likes the "Rev. Dr." honorifics in spite of the fact that the doctorate is honorary.

The Rev. Dr. Harrison strongly supports discrimination by the Boy Scouts of America.

As an aside, this is the same pretentious schmuck who criticized Rev. Rob Morris for participating in the interfaith prayer vigil after the Newtown massacre last December. Essentially his reasoning was that it was wrong to give the impression that other religions are equal. But I digress.

Matthew C. Harrison
In a statement issued yesterday:
Western culture is at a crucial moment in history. After 103 years of existence, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) may vote to change drastically its membership policy. ...
I don't think that there is much risk to "western culture" if some Scouts can admit that they are gay without being expelled from the organization. This guy is rather pompous.
The proposed change will highlight sexuality, which has not been and should not be a matter of focus for Scouts. I suspect it will make it more challenging to care for young people struggling with same-sex attraction and perhaps open our churches to legal action.
Kids are not "struggling with same sex attraction." Gay children want to be accepted for who  they. What they struggle with is guys like this who seem to think, and promote the idea, that sexual orientation is a bad habit.
This vote matters because, for more than a century, scouting has sought to uphold moral values at a level greater than that of general society. The capitulation now to societal pressures would mar the long and honorable history of the Boy Scouts to honor the natural law of God, which at least for now, is still reflected in the current scouting membership policy.
When Missouri was a slave state, I am certain that "the natural law of God" was cited as justification. More importantly, this guy has some interesting concepts of morality and honor. Even using his prudish standards, a chaste gay scout is no less moral than a chaste straight scout. As for being "honorable," what could possibly be more offensive to American values than discrimination?

But I get it. The implication is that allowing openly gay Scouts will foster a 24/7 fuckfest. We all know that gays are promiscuous perverts lacking self-control. It is the same argument they made against the repeal of DADT. At its core Harrison's appeal is to prejudice based on stereotype. It is bigotry per se.
For these reasons, I and some 25 other Protestant church leaders have signed onto a statement, copied below, that implores BSA not to change its policy, noting that, “In our current culture, it’s more important than ever for our churches to protect and provide moral nurture for young people and for the Scouts.”
The idea that Harrison, and the 25 other misguided clerics, need to protect boys from gay children is particularly offensive. It is a propagation of the theme that gays    even gay teens and preteens    are a threat to children.

Harrison provides the perfect example of "homophobia."
