The Strange and Intellectually Corrupt Mind of Matt Barber

Matt Barber
I rarely write about Matt Barber. Criticism of so obvious a crackpot is gratuitous. I strongly suspect that Barber has some odd fantasies.

Matt Barber's employer, Liberty Counsel, makes no effort to reign in his outrageous views. I have to assume that Mat Staver concurs with Mr. Barber's polemics from delirium. Today, Mr. Barber is on a tear about the Boy Scouts in Charisma News. Who cares? However, there are two paragraphs that deserve our opprobrium:
This is particularly disquieting when you consider that homosexual assaults against boys occur at an alarmingly disproportionate rate when compared to heterosexual assaults. Of course, not every “gay” man—self-identified or otherwise—is a pedophile, but, and despite baseless claims to the contrary, many studies indicate that a disturbing percentage of same-sex-attracted men are.

Consider, for instance, a study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior of over 200 convicted pedophiles and pederasts. It found that “86 percent of offenders against males described themselves as homosexual or bisexual.” This demonstrates, as notes Peter Sprigg of the Family Research Council, that “homosexual or bisexual men are approximately 10 times more likely to molest children than heterosexual men.”
In the first paragraph, Mr. Barber's link to presumably reinforce "many studies" is to one of his posts at WND.  That's certainly credible. WND is currently suggesting that President Obama found time between is wife and gay lovers to murder Andrew Breitbart.

The second link to "a study" is actually a link to a pamphlet by Peter Sprigg at an anti-gay hate group, Family Research Council. Sprigg is a Protestant minister who presumes to be FRC's "expert" when it comes to the gay.

Matt Barber is wrong.

There is a mountain of evidence disproving Mr. Barber's contention. Let's start with the Jenny/Roesler study (my link is to the NIH):
In the remaining 269 cases, two offenders were identified as being gay or lesbian. In 82% of cases (222/269), the alleged offender was a heterosexual partner of a close relative of the child. Using the data from our study, the 95% confidence limits, of the risk children would identify recognizably homosexual adults as the potential abuser, are from 0% to 3.1%. These limits are within current estimates of the prevalence of homosexuality in the general community.

CONCLUSIONS: The children in the group studied were unlikely to have been molested by identifiably gay or lesbian people.
The psychology department at University of California-Davis has published Facts About Homosexuality and Child Molestation with an extensive bibliography. The conclusion:
The empirical research does not show that gay or bisexual men are any more likely than heterosexual men to molest children. This is not to argue that homosexual and bisexual men never molest children. But there is no scientific basis for asserting that they are more likely than heterosexual men to do so. And, as explained above, many child molesters cannot be characterized as having an adult sexual orientation at all; they are fixated on children.
This is just part of Barber's continuing effort to denigrate gay people. Since being terminated as a low-level manager at Allstate, Mr. Barber has provided an exemplar of extreme homophobia (in the true sense of the word).
