Untangling the Family Watch International Tax Mess

Family Watch International is an anti-gay hate group. They also seem to violate US tax law.

The following related organizations solicit tax deductible contributions and are not recognized by the IRS as organizations eligible to receive tax deductible contributions:
  • Family Watch International
  • United Families International
  • Families for Orphans
  • Acenda
On information and belief, contributions are processed by United Families Foundation which is a 501(c)3. UFF does not seem to have filed a tax return since 2008.

According to Family Watch International's website:
FWI is not affiliated with any religious group or political party and is a tax-exempt, tax-deductible charity under Section 501 (c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
Soliciting donations:
Family Watch International is a Section 501 (c)(3) organization under the IRS code, so contributions are tax deductible for U.S. taxpayers.
The president of FWI is Sharon Slater.

As some of you know, I maintain a database of not-for-profit organizations. This includes 5.2 million revocations of all non-profits over the last two years and 829,549 records of non-profits eligible to receive tax deductible contributions.

Family Watch International is not a 501(c)3.

Apparently (based on a telephone number reverse search), FWI is actually United Families Foundation (EIN 570658997). United Families Foundation does not seem to have filed any tax returns since 2008. UFF seems to be doing business as United Families International which is also an anti-gay hate group as represented by this pamphlet. UFI claims to be a 501(c)3 organization soliciting tax deductible contributions.

But there is even more

Family Watch International claims to provide humanitarian aid through Families for Orphans which also solicits tax-deductible contributions. Families for Orphans claims to have partnered with Acenda. According to Acenda:
To keep your donations tax deductable <sic>, we have partnered with another non-profit family-based advocacy group doing good work around the globe, Family Watch International (FWI).
