NOM's NC Senate Candidate Using Church Offerings for His Campaign

Mark Harris

North Carolina Senate hopeful, Mark Harris, is being scrutinized for using church offerings as campaign funds. Pastor Harris was one of the driving forces behind the NC constitutional amendment that bans same-sex marriage and has been endorsed by National Organization for Marriage.

According to the Christian Post, Harris is on leave from the First Baptist Church in Charlotte. However, he has made several recent church appearances as an invited preacher where he has accepted money that could be a violation of campaign finance laws. Moreover, Reverend Harris has not reported any of these funds on required campaign finance disclosures.

Harris, who prefers to go by "Dr." Harris, has also been endorsed by Mike Huckabee.

Harris is trying to win the GOP nomination to unseat Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan. He is in an uphill battle against Thom Tillis, the speaker of the state House. Tillis has received considerable financial support from Americans for Prosperity.
