Staver still claims that gays were sexually abused as children

Mat Staver - Liberty Counsel
Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel is “saddened.” The Supreme Court has declined to hear a challenge to the California law that bans sexual orientation conversion therapy for minors. This lets stand a ruling by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that the state has a valid interest in protecting children from a procedure with no proven value that can be harmful. According to Staver:
I am deeply saddened for the families we represent and for the thousands of children that our professional clients counsel, many of whom developed these unwanted attractions because of abuse of a pedophile. The minors we represent do not want to act on same-sex attractions, nor do they want to engage in such behavior. They are greatly benefiting from this counseling. Their grades have gone up, their self-esteem has improved, and their relationships at home are much improved.

Where to begin? First of all, Staver does not represent children; He represents deeply religious Christian parents who seem immune to medical findings about sexual orientation. Moreover, according to the American Psychiatric Association, “Sexual abuse does not appear to be more prevalent in children who grow up to identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, than in children who identify as heterosexual.”

As for the rest of Staver's BS, he represented the parents of exactly two children. Aside from the limited sample it's hard to imagine that their grades and self-esteem have increased because of some crackpot counseling. If their relationships at home have improved that is temporary. Once the moronic parents learn that their kid is still gay (which is inevitable), things will go south very quickly. Further damage is done to the family dynamic because the child has been literally forced to lie to his or her parents in order to receive praise and acceptance. Staver continues:
These children have been victimized twice – first by the likes of Jerry Sandusky, and second by legislators and judges who have essentially barged into their private therapy rooms and told them that they must pursue their unwanted and dangerous same-sex sexual attractions and behavior.
Staver is right about one thing. These kids have been victimized twice. First by their parents and again by Liberty Counsel.
