Sweet Cakes by Melissa loses another round and is found to have unlawfully discriminated

Sweet Cakes owner Aaron Klein denied a wedding cake to a lesbian couple in May, 2013. Apparently he asks all of his customers how and where his cakes will be eaten. The couple filed a complaint, and in January 2014, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries found "substantial evidence" that Sweet Cakes wasn't within their rights to deny service.

The Kleins attorneys – Alliance Defending Freedom – filed for a summary dismissal of the case citing religious freedom. Now, in an interim ruling, Oregon's Bureau of Labor and Industries determined, once again, that Sweet Cakes by Melissa unlawfully discriminated by refusing service to the couple.

The next hearing is scheduled for March 10. A determination will be made if the bakery owes the couple any damages.
