AFA Newspaper ad is more about donors than appealing to the Supreme Court

The anti-gay hate group, American Family Association, has placed an advertisement in the Washington Post directed to the attention of the Supreme Court. The advertisement is titled “As you deliberate on marriage remember whose idea it was in the first place.” The ad concludes with a quote from scripture; “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother, and the two shall become one flesh.”

Knowing full well that this ad is pointless its purpose is likely an attempt to demonstrate to AFA's supporters that the organization is actually doing something to oppose marriage equality. In other words, folks at AFA made a calculation that placing the ad would bring in more donations than its cost.

There is not much that any of these groups can do to influence the outcome of marriage equality before the Supreme Court. They will submit amicus briefs but these organizations, that are so focused on opposing gay rights, need to demonstrate activity in order to attract donors. National Organization for Marriage, for example, has its “marriage march.” Family Research Council president Tony Perkins will be highly visible between now and when the Court delivers its opinion.
