Defeat of Charlotte anti-discrimination bill demonstrates long road ahead for equality

Only three of America's 20 largest cities do not prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation — Charlotte, NC; Jacksonville, FL and Memphis TN. Last night, Charlotte could have left that list of shame. However, the city council voted 6-5 against expanding the city's nondiscrimination ordinance to include sexual orientation and, to some extent, gender identity.
