Oklahoma bill changing the issuance of marriage licenses moves forward

The Oklahoma state house has approved a bill that would remove the state from the issuance of marriage licenses. The burden would now shift to clergy who would issue a marriage certificate. The measure passed by 67 to 24 and now moves to the state senate for consideration.

This appears to be an attempt to make it more difficult for same-sex couples to marry. If passed, the law might be a clear violation of equal protection that affects not only same-sex couples but those who do not subscribe to religion.
