Florida passes clean adoption bill

On Tuesday, the Florida Senate sent Governor Rick Scott a bill that repeals the state's ban on adoptions by gays. This was merely a formality because the ban was struck down by an appeals court in 2010.

However, conservative Christians are very disappointed that they could not obtain a “conscience clause” added to the bill. That would have allowed private adoption services to discriminate in spite of the fact that they are funded by taxpayer money. In effect these private services are contractors that do the work of the state. A separate bill licensing the discrimination was passed in the Florida House but died in the Senate last week.

Gov. Scott has not said whether or not he would sign the bill.
