Just because they believe their own BS doesn't mean that we have to

Bullshit

In 2009, as the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act was being debated in congress, the Christian conservative lobby pretty much went unhinged. In unison they assured us that the sole purpose of hate crimes legislation was to lock up Christian pastors. I am not exaggerating. They really said so and, astonishingly, people believed them. Educated grownups were telling their constituents that characterizing certain bias crimes as “hate crimes” was designed to put Christians in criminal peril. Educated grownups (albeit lacking in critical thinking skills) were afraid.

Louie Gohmert

Then there were people like Louie Gohmert. From the floor of the US House of Representatives, Congressman Gohmert, and others, called the hate crimes bill the “pedophile protection act” based upon the astute premise that pedophilia was a sexual orientation which would somehow be protected. He really said that. Louie asked us to believe that a Christian physically protecting his son from a pedophile (In Louie-world, by the way, all gays are pedophiles) would be charged with a hate crime.

All of these horrible things were guaranteed to happen.

Nearly six years later no pastor has been jailed for preaching the gospel (including that highlighted passage in Leviticus). No sexual deviants have been somehow protected by the hate crimes law. The ASPCC has confirmed that no Christians were harmed in the making of this movie.

Six years later pretty much the same people are at it again. They have no shame. A crescendo of demagoguery is taking place in advance of Tuesday's oral arguments at the Supreme Court in the marriage cases. If one is attuned to the vagaries of the Christian right the consensus seems to be that they are all going to get locked up (exactly why they will be incarcerated remains unexplained). If they manage to avoid prison then we are wrecking their marriages and driving their businesses into insolvency. At a minimum we are determined to “silence Christians.” Some of the crazies have floated the idea that we want to marry in order to acquire more children that we will sexually abuse.

All of these things are guaranteed to happen.

A common thread in Christian circles is that we are intolerant because we will not tolerate their efforts to discriminate against us. Up is down. Left is right.

Their aim, as the majority, is to have the unrestrained ability to oppress and discriminate against the LGBT minority by feigning persecution as if they were actually the minority. It is cognitive dissonance. They resent and oppose anything that might provide their fellow LGBT citizens a measure of dignity. Conservative Christians seem to see everything in zero-sum terms; a gain for us is a loss for them. Protection for us is peril for them.

These people have repeated routine demagoguery so often and for so long that they believe their own bullshit. This in spite of the fact that they cannot point to Massachusetts and claim that any of these terrible things have happened. The Supreme Court seems likely to invalidate same-sex marriage bans. Armed with their usual victims list these characters will try to infect the country with license-to-discriminate laws. The next battle has already commenced (along with the national controversy of where transgender people can toilet).

Within the next six years (hopefully) we will see a similar unsuccessful campaign against ENDA. The sole objective of ENDA will be to sink so-called “Christian businesses.” Did I mention that they have no shame? Six years from now gay marriage will not have resulted in the persecution of any Christians. Six years from now some blogger will come to the same conclusion; The culture war never ends because these people are never happy unless they are miserable. And that's a fact.
