It is astonishing how the Christian Right portrays conversion "therapy" bans

There is a clear consensus among all of the medical and counseling professional associations that conversion or so-called "reparative" therapy is not only useless but toxic. The science is also startlingly clear that sexual orientation is innate and immutable. It seems that every supposed ex-gay that we meet has an economic interest in claiming to be ex-gay.

Moreover, there is no connection between sexual abuse and the forming of one's sexual orientation. Were that not sufficient the demise of Exodus International and the admission by its leaders that nobody really changes should serve to cause Christians to act like, well … Christians with respect to how they treat children.

That doesn't seem to be the case.

Tuesday at the conservative (albeit fringe) website, the American Clarion there is a piece titled “Nevada Considers Gambling With Children’s Lives.” It is attributed to “Newswire,” whatever or whoever that is. The article begins:
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Sexually abused minors in Nevada may soon find they are barred from getting counseling, if certain state legislators have their way.

Late Friday night, the State Senate passed S.B. 353, which would ban sexually abused or confused children from seeking counseling to deal with the results of abuse, including unwanted same-sex attractions. The bill is scheduled for a hearing in the Assembly Commerce and Labor committee on Wednesday, May 27 at 1:30 p.m.

Licensed clinical professional counselor Christopher Doyle of Equality And Justice For All … says the ban is reckless and equivalent to handing a victory to sexual predators, as their victims will be barred from getting licensed therapy to deal with sexual identity questions resulting from the abuse. He is encouraging all concerned citizens to sign a petition …
Sexually abused children should see a qualified therapist immediately and not some crackpot claiming that the abuse has turned them gay. It is patently absurd. Shame on Mr. Doyle who, for financial reasons, facilitates the propagation of this nonsense. He is potentially harming, not only children, but entire families. If there is a “sexual predator” to be afraid of it would be Mr. Doyle.
