Staver: 'Churches will be next on the chopping block'

Mat Staver - Liberty Counsel

Mat Staver, head of the anti-gay hate group Liberty Counsel, has led an unsuccessful legal effort to allow Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis to continue to refuse service to gay couples. In the process his client, following his advice, has been – and is currently – in contempt of court.

According to American Family Association's “news” blog:
“Kim Davis is not the only person to have this issue within the last few months since the Supreme Court opinion. But she certainly represents many people, not just clerks, but others and a wide variety of businesses and professions and occupations that are having their free exercise rights challenged.”

The attorney warns that churches will be next “on the chopping block,” echoing a warning from pro-family leaders in recent weeks after the Obergefell v. Hodges ruling in June.
Staver knows better. He will say just about anything – no matter how absurd – to defend his beliefs. There is no possibility, whatsoever, that houses of worship will be affected by the Obergefell decision.

Today, attorneys with Liberty Counsel will ask the Supreme Court of the United States to stay the refusal of the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals to issue a stay while the appeal is in progress. That request will go to Justice Kagan who is assigned to the Sixth Circuit. The likelihood of success is infinitesimal.

Assuming that Kagan denies the stay Davis will be left with three options:
  1. Issue marriage licenses in accordance with the order of the district court.
  2. Continue to refuse to obey the court's order in which case she will likely go to jail and be impeached.
  3. Resign her office.
My guess is that she will go through door number 2. I think that this ignoramus wants to be a martyr. Staver might actually prefer the manufacture of a victim over a legal victory; Mat Staver is unbalanced.
