Davis 'Under God's Authority'

Even though the Supreme Court has declined to intervene, no one is forcing Kim Davis to issue marriage licenses to gay couples. However, if she is unable to do so then she has an obligation to resign. Despite appearances, her office is not a family entitlement.

According to the AP she was confronted by one or more couples this morning. She ordered them to leave. The refused until she issued the licenses. Davis, claiming that she was “under God's authority,” said “then you are going to have a long day.”

The next move will be on the part of US District Court Judge David L. Bunning. The George W. Bush appointee will be asked to hold Davis in contempt of court in order to enforce his own ruling. Ms. Davis could face steep, and mounting, fines and even jail time if she continues to defy the court. The ACLU in its opposition to the original stay by Judge Bunning also noted the misconduct of Davis' lawyers at Liberty Counsel. They advised their client on more than one occasion to disobey the court. Those attorneys are also facing the possibility of sanctions
