Inevitable: "Gay community split on transgender rights"

Jazz Jennings - a transgender girl
Hate groups converge. Laurie Higgins who represents the Illinois Family Institute is interviewed about transgender rights on the “news” blog of American Family Association. IFI and AFA are both certified anti-gay hate groups. Higgins is quoted as saying:
Now we Christians, we conservatives are aligned with some homosexuals in opposition to men and women pretending to be the opposite sex and wanting unrestricted access to locker rooms and restrooms.

The same piece notes:
… Bryan Fischer pointed out last week, pro-homosexual groups are circulating a petition against what they describe as an “infringement on the rights of individuals, particularly women" that "men claiming to be transgender [are] demanding access to bathrooms, locker rooms, women's shelters and other such spaces reserved for women.”
Mr. Fischer has his own special hate group within AFA. What Fischer is referring to is something that I wrote about on November 6. Some anonymous douche bag (it could have been Mr. Fischer for all we know) started a petition on Change.org to separate the LGB from the T. After two days it had all of 751 signatures.

Contrary to Ms. Higgins' and Mr. Fischer's wet dream, the gay community is unequivocally supportive of the transgender community. If anything we are paying more attention to transgender citizens which has contributed to the ridiculous right wing freak-out over where they can pee.

These folks are in a state of utter confusion and dismay over the whole Caitlyn Jenner thing. Penny Nance president of Concerned Women for America – another anti-gay hate group – wrote a piece in the Christian Post Sunday titled “‘Woman of the Year’ Caitlyn Jenner Has XY Chromosomes and a Penis” — referring to Glamour Magazine's decision this month, naming Ms. Jenner “Woman of the Year.”

While I am at it, the most absurd participant in the unhinged derby goes to Red  State's Erick Erickson who went through a radio rant titled “Turns Out Heterosexal <sic> Boys Don’t Want to Date Boys.” The latter boys are actually transgender girls. Erickson is correct. Just like him those kids will need to mature a bit to appreciate and understand transgender females. According to Erickson:
Boys who are heterosexual don’t want to date other boys even when those other boys self-identify as girls.

Like Bruce Jenner, these boys still have their boy parts. And heterosexual boys just are not all that interested in them.

I mean, after all, they were born heterosexual.
We cannot expect Ms. Higgins, Ms. Nance, Mr. Fischer or Mr. Erickson to have the slightest clue. These folks are biblical literalists — obsessed with (and captives of) the ancient writings of superstitious men who did not understand the natural world around them. Just for starters, Earth was flat and the center of the universe with the sun dutifully orbiting around it.

As much as these folks would like a fractured gay community it does not exist. It does not exist because we and our allies are critical thinkers (we are forced to be) who make judgments based on evidence. Those of us who are religious understand the need for perspective. More than anything, though, being gay has caused many of us to have above average empathy for the plight of others. That includes people who are transgender who I am proud to call our brothers and sisters with no hesitation whatsoever.
