“By making this a public safety issue Governor McCrory is indulging in appalling bigotry.”
It is not only the citizens of Charlotte that will be impacted by changing basic restroom and locker room norms but also citizens from across our state and nation who visit and work in Charlotte. This shift in policy could also create major public safety issues by putting citizens in possible danger from deviant actions by individuals taking improper advantage of a bad policy. On Monday, Charlotte council members approved expanding the city’s existing nondiscrimination ordinance with a 7-4 vote. Charlotte's ordinance banning discrimination in public accommodations now extends to include sexual orientation and gender identity. Transgender citizens may use facilities consistent with their gender identity.
By making this a public safety issue, Governorn McCrory is indulging in appalling bigotry. The very notion that transgender citizens pose a threat of “deviant actions” is offensive hyperbole that is unsupported by any factual evidence. He is also floating the idea that people will pretend to be transgender in order to have access to opposite sex bathrooms; something that simply does not happen and has not happened. Just how many transgender people does McCrory think exist? They constitute a minuscule minority that requires these protections for their safety.
Sadly the Republican controlled legislature will probably do McCrory's bidding which is why we need the United States Civil Rights Act to include gender identity and sexual orientation. Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself seems to have selective application criteria.
