One year of same-sex marriage in Alabama

Roy Moore
The 'Ayatollah of Alabama' — Judge Roy Moore
Tuesday marked one year since the Supreme Court declined to stay the order of U.S. District Judge Callie Granade striking down Alabama's same-sex marriage ban. That doesn't sit well with the Ayatollah of Alabama, Judge Roy Moore. Moore has orchestrated what should be an embarrassing “states' rights” campaign to thwart equality. Sometimes Moore had an assist from the hate group, Liberty Counsel. In the end:

  • Gay couples got married.
  • Children being raised by gay couples got married parents.
  • Alabama taxpayers have wasted  a considerable sum on futile nullification efforts that are both illegal and unconstitutional. Taxpayers are probably funding part of Moore's campaign for governor in 2017.
  • No one's traditional marriage has been affected in any way whatsoever.
LGBT citizens in Alabama remain unequal. They can be legally denied housing, employment and service by public accommodations because of their sexuality. Moreover, Roy Moore is the creature of the citizens of Alabama. They elected him and they knew exactly what they were getting.  So far, the taxpayers of Mobile County have shelled out more than $300,000 defending their probate judge who refuses to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

Ultimately Alabama lost opportunities to solve real problems; 19% of Alabamans are below the poverty level and 17% of the populace do not possess a high school diploma. Oh, and by the way, Alabama's divorce rate is 20% higher than the US rate as a whole.

We and they have much work to do.
