What made SD legislators hate so much that they took it out on trans kids?

The Republican Party's continuing obsession with restricting where transgender kids can pee.
An anti-trans bill has made it through the Republican controlled South Dakota legislature and is sitting on the governor's desk. It is an exercise in ignorance and hate. The unwillingness to accommodate a small, fragile minority group is morally unacceptable. It has been a long time but I did some consulting in both Rapid City and Huron. This is not the South Dakota that I remember.

According to HB-1008 “The term, biological sex, as used in this Act, means the physical condition of being male or female as determined by a person's chromosomes and identified at birth by a person's anatomy.” Having thus limited gender, the bill goes on to say:
Every restroom, locker room, and shower room located in a public elementary or secondary school that is designated for student use and is accessible by multiple students at the same time shall be designated for and used only by students of the same biological sex. In addition, any public school student participating in a school sponsored activity off school premises which includes being in a state of undress in the presence of other students shall use those rooms designated for and used only by students of the same biological sex.
In other words there is not such thing as gender identity. Where did these legislators acquire their social science and medical science erudition? Do they honestly think that a child presents as gender non-confirming for fun? Is their idea of gender non-conformity an ersatz Streisand drag queen? Is this matter sufficiently crucial that federal law (which requires accommodation) should be violated.

Trans Equality explains “…hundreds of South Dakota students have signed a petition opposing HB 1008—and not a single South Dakota resident testified in favor of the bill at Senate hearing last week. Governor Duagaard should listen to the real experts on the ground—South Dakota students, teachers and school administrators—and reject this discriminatory legislation.”

I hope that South Dakotans are asking their governor the same questions that I would ask of the legislators. Governor Dugaard's contact form is here.
