AFA thinks that it's got a gotcha with PayPal

American Family Association, an anti-LGBT hate group, ran a full page ad in an undisclosed newspaper in San Jose, CA. The ad reads:
Dear PayPal,
How can you build your global operations center in Malaysia where LGBT individuals are whipped and jailed
…but you boycott North Carolina for enacting a law requiring people to use a restroom consistent with their biological gender?
AFA answered their own question. PayPal is an American company based in San Jose, California. It's key executives are all Americans. Their concerns are for domestic public policy.

It is true that Malaysia is a terrible place for LGBT people. In 2011, PayPal opened what amounts to a regional operations center in Malaysia which serves English speaking customers in Asia. At the time it was still owned by Ebay (PayPal was spun off in 2014). Malaysia was chosen for the availability of multilingual employees and Internet infrastructure.

The choices are very different. Continuing to operate in Malaysia in contrast to opening a new facility in North Carolina. AFA is asking people to chip in 15 bucks as “sponsors” of the ad.
