Ted Cruz claims to be 'on the verge of victory'

Ted Cruz
If prayer worked Ted Cruz would undoubtedly be the Republican nominee for president. The fact that he has been essentially eliminated from the race hasn't eliminated the need to continue to raise money. The theory behind this is that, if Trump falls short of a minority then the profoundly anti-gay Cruz will be the party's savior and selection on the second ballot. So here's part of the fund-raising email:
You see, running for President of the United States is a significant sacrifice. Only by the grace of God -- and with unwavering help from my wonderful supporters like you -- have we reached this point -- on the verge of capturing the Republican nomination.

And while I'm on the verge of victory, I need to share something with you.

The sacrifices for our campaign are steep, but I'm proud to be making them on your behalf …
Cruz indulges in describing the hardships of the campaign; lost sleep, no free time, etc. Eventually he gets to the point:
So, today I'm asking you to make an important sacrifice with me, [first name of this persona].

Will you join me by making a special, sacrificial gift to my campaign in the next 24 hours?
Is the theme sacrificial lambs? Cruz seems to be appealing to the idea of sacrifice to please God. You can be sure that Cruz supporters hear the dog whistles.
