Rick Santorum is STILL an idiot

Rick Santorum
Many colleges and universities have determined that Young America's Foundation is an anti-LGBT hate group. Among other things they have this fetish for inviting Rick Santorum to speak at college campuses. Such was the case at Cornell University on Wednesday. As is often the case, students at the Ivy League university protested. Apparently some of them attempted to interrupt Santorum's speech.

In right wing circles Santorum is being lauded for saying the following:
I suspect that all of the people that just stood will walk around this campus and talk about tolerance and all of them will tell you you have to celebrate what? Diversity! Right? Celebrate diversity. Preach tolerance. But when it comes to anybody that disagrees with them, there is no tolerance. There is no tolerance.
The problem with that argument (which the right wing audience applauded) is that tolerance doesn't mean that we forfeit discernment. For example, very few universities would invite David Duke to speak on campus. Moreover, tolerance does not extend to one group tolerating the intolerance of another group.

To LGBT people, Rick Santorum is no more palatable than David Duke would be to a group of Jews (I happen to be both gay and Jewish). Santorum is a walking hate group and one of the reasons that he is invited to speak is because he is so inflammatory and offensive. The kids at YAF have some growing up to do. Apparently they need a jerk like Santorum to validate their own bigotry and they need Santorum to inflict that bigotry directly on its intended target. That's hate.

The fact that the basis for Santorum's bigotry is his religion doesn't alter the fact that he is a bigot. I would remind him, and YAF, that if you ask any Klansman he will proudly proclaim that he is a defender of the Christian faith. Discernment works both ways. We can discern that Santorum is unsuitable for inclusion in polite society. Santorum has the ability to discern that some of the teachings of the Catholic Church are at odds with science, archaic and needlessly offensive. Santorum refuses to question those teachings and that makes him an idiot devoid of critical thinking skills.
