NOM needs "members"

According to Brian S. Brown, head of the insolvent National Organization for Marriage: “We Need Additional Members.” This is about as genuine as those tacky pleather “Members Only” jackets. A “member” of an organization pays dues and received benefits in return. NOM wants contributions and donors receive nothing in return. From the same email:
The backbone of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) is our members, those individuals who commit to make a minimum contribution of at least $35 annually to support our work. With the dawn of a new year and the start of a new presidential administration, NOM needs to increase our membership to be effective.

We need 500 people to step up during the remainder of January with a contribution of at least $35. Will you help?
“Effective” at what exactly? Whatever Trump or the Supreme Court do, NOM will not be a participant.
This year, 2017, will be a pivotal time in our campaign to restore marriage, protect religious liberty and promote the truth of gender. New Supreme Court Justices will be appointed, important legislation protecting marriage supporters considered and likely passed, radical bureaucrats in the IRS who target groups like NOM removed, illegal decrees on gender reversed, and many other advances for our issues.
What “campaign?” The only thing that NOM ever campaigns for is donors. They are sure as hell not going to overturn Obergefell. “Religious liberty™” usually means the liberty to discriminate which is governed by state and municipal laws and ordinances. At the federal level that issue was settled by the Supreme Court decades ago in Employment Division v. Smith. I suppose, regarding legislation, that Brown is referring to the First Amendment Defense Act. I don't think that will ever get out of committee (it is unconstitutional per se) and it certainly lacks 60 votes in the Senate. Moreover, the House version has already been poison pilled by its sponsors. FADA IS DEADA.

IRS? Seriously? NOM lost its case against the IRS and it cost them a half-million dollars in donor funds that went down the crapper. I do expect that ED/DOJ guidance on trans students will be reversed (if it hasn't been already). NOM has nothing to do with it.
But these things won't happen all by themselves. NOM is the leading group in the country at the forefront of advancing our issues, and we must be in a strong position to continue to push our positions.
“Leading group?” At what? Pissing away money? It takes balls to keep asking for money for an organization that has never done anything. If anti-LGBT animus on behalf of the Catholic Church is currency then they have accomplished something. NOM was established to prevent marriage equality from becoming a reality. They lost. John Eastman, NOM's co-chair and attorney, won. He made a pile of money off of Brown's idiocy but NOM lost every contest that they have entered. A couple of early wins were reversed.

That doesn't mean that they are harmless. NOM and Brian S. Brown spread lies about LGBT people including children. They sow division in our society which makes us less civil. They are like the Tobacco Institute. Instead of trying to spread the notion that smoking is neither addictive nor harmful in defiance of medical science, NOM tries to spread the idea that being LGBT is a chosen behavior. Again, that is in defiance of medical and social science. If people believe the lie it fucks up kids and it fucks up parents.
