Owing to having been ambushed and shot I have severe PTSD. I even spent a few weeks in what we euphemistically call a “safe environment” at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. The food is actually quite good if you are in the market for such an accommodation. There are two things that I should not (and do not) do: Drive and carry a gun.
I do not drive because the medications I consume impair my hand-eye coordination. Uber and Lyft are just fine. I don't carry a gun because there is a pretty good chance that I would use it when I should not; I have a mercurial temper. For me, armed and dangerous are equivalents. Yet, I can walk into any gun shop in Florida and legally purchase WMD. I should not and I will not but I can.
An Obama-era rule required the Social Security Administration to send records to The National Instant Criminal Background Check System of some beneficiaries after they’ve been deemed incapable of managing their financial affairs. These individuals have a disabling mental disorder ranging from acute anxiety to schizophrenia. The Senate voted 57—43 following House passage largely along party lines on Feb. 2. Exactly why we would want a schizophrenic to have a deadly weapon is anyone's guess.
Not a single Republican voted against the measure. Their employer — the NRA — would disapprove. Democrats who voted in favor are: Donnelly (IN), Heitkamp (ND), Manchin (WV) and Tester (MT). King (I-ME) also voted in favor.
We accept the fact that there are limits to gun ownership and that these limits do not infringe on the Second Amendment. Our lawmakers seem to have no problem infringing on common sense.
For the record, people diagnosed with schizophrenia usually experience a combination of positive (i.e. hallucinations, delusions, racing thoughts), negative (i.e. apathy, lack of emotion, poor or non-existant social functioning), and cognitive (disorganized thoughts, difficulty concentrating and/or following instructions, difficulty completing tasks, memory problems).
Just the kind of people we want carrying guns; people with delusions who cannot follow instructions and have disorganized thinking. Sounds like a description of the Republican Party or Trump.
