Richard Grenell

Richard Grenell
The subtitle of a piece on PinkNews reads: “President Trump is set to appoint an openly gay official to one of the biggest jobs in his administration.” They are referring to Richard Grenell who seems to be Trump's pick for ambassador to NATO. I do not think that this ambassadorship qualifies as one of the biggest jobs in the administration. Nor am I sure that Grenell is qualified given that his foreign service experience has been limited to being a spokesman for people like John Bolton. The one thing that I am sure of is that Grenell is gay.

Grenell, you may recall, was briefly a spokesman for Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign. Anti-gay religious conservatives were successful in hounding Grenell out of the post because of his sexual orientation. There was nothing subtle about their campaign. Grenell and Romney parted company after only 25 days together (Romney never was a profile in courage).

Grenell has a BA from the conservative Christian Evangel College (now Evangel University). It begs the question of whether a gay man chose to attend an anti-gay college or if he accepted his sexual orientation during his time at Evangel. Grenell then went to the dark side and obtained a master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.

For nearly five years of the Obama administration this post was held by Ivo Daalder who seems to have been more qualified. Grenell was an early supporter of Trump.
