Chechnya is Imprisoning Gay Men in Concentration Camps

Ramzan Kadyrov — Head of the Chechen Republic

Chechnya has opened concentration camps for gay men — the first in Europe since the Nazi Third Reich. This comes in the wake of 100 gay men being rounded up and three killed as Ramzan Kadyrov, Head of the Chechen Republic, continues to move Chechnya towards an Islamic nation governed by Sharia law. Kadyrov is a thug who publicly supports honor killings.

Svetlana Zakharova, from the Russian LGBT Network, told MailOnline: “Gay people have been detained and rounded up and we are working to evacuate people from the camps and some have now left the region.

“Those who have escaped said they are detained in the same room and people are kept altogether, around 30 or 40. They are tortured with electric currents and heavily beaten, sometimes to death.”

The men are being tortured to reveal the names of other gay men. Razman Kadyrov, an important ally of Vladimir Putin, allegedly ordered the roundups and the  establishment of the concentration camps. However, his official position is that there are no gays in Checknya. A spokesman for Kadyrov stated “it is impossible to persecute those who are not in the republic.”

Presumably Putin is content to allow these human rights abuses to continue.
