Gay roundup in Chechnya: 100 arrests, Three Murdered

100 accused gay men were arrested and three were killed in a roundup in Chechnya. Novaya Gazeta, an independent newspaper in Russia, said that it has confirmed the report with Chechen police and government sources.

Through a spokesman, Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov denied the report claiming that there are no homosexuals in the Muslim-majority region. According to the state news agency RIA Novosti the spokesman said, “it's impossible to persecute those who are not in the republic.”

Kadyrov is backed by the Kremlin. He has been converting Checknya from a Muslim-majority country to an Islamic state governed by Sharia law.
