Russia Manipulates Information on Chechen Human Rights Violations

Ramzan Kadyrov — Head of the Chechen Republic
Russian foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, told reporters on Monday that Russia would be concerned about any violations of human rights. However, he claims that no one has confirmed the alleged abuses by Chechen authorities against gay men. Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has dismissed the reports of round-ups, murders, concentration camps and torture as nothing more than “provacative” which is what he told Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin.

Kadyrov previously claimed that his government cannot be persecuting gays because there are no gays in Chechnya. And he really expects that anyone is going to believe that nonsense?

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters on Monday that the Kremlin has no reason to disbelieve Kadyrov because no one has publicly come out as a victim. According to the AP, “rights activists and Chechnya experts say it is improbable that any gay person will ever come out publicly as a victim of harassment and torture in Chechnya because of the deep-seated homophobia in the North Caucasus and fear of reprisals to their families.”
