General Jerry is at it again - Beware the transgender!

Tuesday, Retired General Jerry Boykin penned an awkward open letter to Secretary of Defense Mattis for Breitbart (of course). The transphobic diatribe is dishonest at the outset because it is intended for public consumption rather than Sec. Mattis' eyes.

Boykin was a perfect fit for Family Research Council. FRC is a hate group and Boykin is rabidly, viscerally anti-LGBT. In simplest terms Boykin is a bigot as well as a Christian fanatic. His opinions reflect his personality challenges more than an honest appraisal of circumstances.

If there is something cautionary on display here it has nothing to do with the service of trans people. Rather, as citizens, we must question how someone with such erratic judgment as Boykin ever became a three-star general. Should Mattis read Boykin's piece, puzzlement over Boykin's promotions should be the take-away.

According to Boykin, trans personnel are not suitable for service:
On June 30, 2016, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announced that transgender service members would no longer be discharged from military service solely for being transgendered. Later, the Department of Defense (DOD) announced that as of July 1, 2017, transgender recruits would be accepted into the military. The DOD took these steps even though transgender personnel are likely to need medical, surgical, and psychological care that undermines their readiness for battle by rendering them non-deployable.
 I am quite impressed with Boykin's training and experience regarding trans healthcare. Boykin assumes some personal risk with any commentary on mental hygiene. Presumably the average transgender person needs less psychological care than the spectacularly batty Jerry Boykin.

These issues have been studied and the conclusions are that they are irrelevant to service. Of course Jerry has an answer for that:
The arguments used by the Obama Administration to support its transgender policy changes stemmed from a few politically correct reports produced by well-funded LGBT activist organizations.
In other words:

  1. Boykin doesn't like the results of those studies and;
  2. The groups and people who did those studies are complicit in undermining the defense of our country and;
  3. Boykin claims to be more proficient than General Mattis in evaluating those studies. Mattis requires Boykin assistance to make decisions.
Boykin blames Obama holdovers for all this terrible social engineering. Which means that Mattis must be a weak manager. Of course Mattis himself is considered to be an intellectual and he was appointed to head Central Command by President Obama. We're it not for that appointment then Mattis would probably not be in his current job.

The bottom line is that the Department of Defense is quite capable of evaluating this issue without the assistance of a crazed religious zealot.  Boykin left the service in 2007 which predates the repeal of Don't-Ask-Don't-Tell. He is in no position to judge the suitability of LGBT personnel to contribute to our military strength.

If nothing else, Boykin is consistent. He is a consistent jackass.
