Former anti-LGBT congressman likely headed to prison

Wednesday, an aid to former Texas congressman Steve Stockman, Jason T. Posey, pleaded guilty to federal charges of fraud for diverting charitable contributions to Stockman's reelection campaign. The government has agreed to request a lighter sentence in return for Posey's cooperation which includes testifying against Stockman. Posey is the second Stockman associate to reach a similar agreement. The 46 year old Posey is currently looking at spending the next 45 years in prison and paying a fine of $4.7 million.

Former Texas Congressman Steve Stockman never demonstrated much in the way of intellectual prowess or, frankly, mental stability. Stockman goes to trial in January where he will not be charged with his most egregious offense: The belief that everyone is as moronic as he is.

Stockman, a former salesman and “family values” Evangelical Christian represented Texas' 9th District for one term from 1995 to 1997. Stockman returned to Congress in 2013, representing the newly drawn 36th District. He served one term, not contesting his seat to run for the Senate opposing incumbent Republican John Cornyn.

Friend of the NRA

Stockman was the darling of the NRA. Among his antics was the claim that the Sandy Hook incident where 20 children were murdered was the result of gun control: “By disarming qualified citizens and officials in schools we have created a dangerous situation for our children.” Stockman filed articles of impeachment against President Obama due to gun safety executive orders following the Sandy Hook incident.

Protector of the faith

Stockman voted against the Violence Against Women Act due to transgender protections. According to Stockman:
This is helping the liberals, this is horrible. Unbelievable. What really bothers—it's called a women's act, but then they have men dressed up as women, they count that. Change-gender, or whatever. How is that—how is that a woman?
As I said, he is not the brightest bulb in the chandelier. He wasn't too swift on gay people either:
Our children have been taught that … any type of sex is a valid outlet for their emotions. They are taught that the problem with sex is not that it is wrong to engage in homosexual, bestial, underage, or premarital sex, but that it is wrong to do so without protection.
Posey, who was Stockman's congressional special projects director was charged, along with Stockman, of fraudulently soliciting some $1.2 million in charitable donations and then diverting that money to Stockman's campaign and personal expenses. Posey and another Stockman aide, Thomas Dodd, also made fraudulent reports to the Federal Elections Commission. Dodd has also pleaded guilty and has agreed to testify against Stockman.

Other donations were funneled to a nonprofit created and controlled by Stockman, Center for the American Future, a 501(c)4. In turn, the nonprofit illegally donated the funds to Stockman's campaign. While a 501(c)4 can donate to political campaigns it is required to be independent of the candidates. Center for the American Future filed a close-out return with the IRS as of August 31, 2016.

Stockman's trial is scheduled to begin on January 29, 2018. He would be an even bigger fool if he did not attempt to cut a plea deal prior to that. In spite of failures to do so, guys like Stockman think that they can persuade others with their lies. I suppose that he could try to blame Posey and Dodd for everything. The evidence suggests otherwise.
