Republican gubernatorial contender praises a hate group - Calls SPLC the real hate group

Jeanne Ives
Illinois state representative Jeanne Ives wants to be the next governor of Illinois. In the process she has praise for Illinois Family Institute, an anti-LGBT hate group, while criticizing Southern Poverty Law Center:
The Illinois Family Institute is a remarkable institute and they serve families well in the state of Illinois. But if you think I'm going to stand here and come up with a defense against something that the Southern Poverty Law Center put out, which themselves should be deemed a hate group, is just nonsense. I thought we came here to talk about economics, because that's what we should be talking about.
Calling SPLC a hate group is getting old. It is the insupportable and indefensible rhetoric of cynical hate group leaders who prefer to demonize SPLC rather than modifying the behavior that caused them to be designated as hate groups in the first place. Sadly, there are people who believe this nonsense and politicians who pander to those same people.

If Illinois Family Institute wishes to relieve itself of the hate group designation it might start by reining in their spokeswoman, Laurie Higgins. Higgins once suggested that school libraries should include a children's book where a birdie is happy when her gay parents die so that she can be adopted by male and female birds. According to Higgins:
When I think about the evil done to children by teachers who tell them that homosexuality is deserving of respect and affirmation, I become angry, and I desperately want others to experience the righteous anger that should well up in decent people who see young children taught that evil is good. We do not embody the love of Christ when we remain silent while body and soul-destroying lies are being affirmed to and in children, teens, and adults. … Our depraved, carrion-devouring culture swoops down and offers them the bleakly deterministic lie that they were born homosexual. They are told that acting on homosexual impulses is a moral good. They are told that refusal to act on such impulses is an act of futility that will result in utterly unfulfilled, lonely lives. And they are told that anyone who dissents from those claims hates them.
That is bigoted gibberish. The fact that Higgins is a five-watt bulb does not mitigate her profound hostility and hatred. Higgins has also called for the termination of gay teachers in public schools.

Getting back to Ms. Ives, she made local news over the summer. In response to trans accommodations she wrote a verbose editorial on her Facebook page saying that “Christians must exit government schools.” Illinois Family Institute republished Ives' polemic. Ives is featured from time to time the ultra conservative Catholic outlet, LifeSiteNews. She obviously believes that sexual orientation and gender are choices. That is as untenable as her nonsensical claim that SPLC is a hate group.
