Miami-Dade County does have a nondiscrimination ordinance on the books. However, due to pressure from the Catholic Church, the ordinance does not apply to religious organizations. Catholic schools are free to exercise a policy that has nothing whatsoever to do with job performance. Florida provides no protections at all for LGBT people.
Within the Archdiocese of Miami there are 48 elementary schools, 13 secondary schools (4 of which are owned by religious orders). There is plenty of room for discrimination.
A number of parents were reportedly outraged by the gratuitous termination. They were content to have a very good and dedicated teacher. Meanwhile the Catholic Church cements its place as the world's largest anti-LGBT hate group.
