"Oklahoma Bishops Praise Protections for Adoption Agencies" - Of course they do

Oklahoma's Catholic bishops are very pleased with themselves because, due in part to their advocacy, Governor Mary Fallin signed SB-1140. SB-1140 is a nasty bit of bigotry. It allows taxpayer funded adoption agencies to discriminate. It permits, for example, Catholic Charities to presume that any opposite-sex couple is a superior parental choice over any gay couple regardless of things like education, income, parental experience/outcomes and marital stability.

The bottom line is that children will not be placed in the best available homes. Furthermore, LGBT children could be placed in particularly stressful situations.

According to the bishops:
With the signing of a bill preserving the religious freedom of adoption agencies in Oklahoma, Gov. Mary Fallin drew praise from the state’s Catholic bishops on Friday.

“We are grateful for Gov. Fallin’s support of religious liberty in Oklahoma. The new law will bring more adoption services to the state and allow crucial faith-based agencies to continue their decades-long tradition of caring for Oklahoma’s most vulnerable children,” Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City and Bishop David Konderla of Tulsa said May 11.
They keep pushing the envelope to the point where religious freedom is no longer free exercise of religion in accordance with the First Amendment. Rather than the right to worship and believe as they choose they insist that they have the right to behave as they choose — and now to do so with public money.

The threat from the Church is always the same: If we cannot discriminate we will close. If they need to discriminate in doing the work of the state then they should close.

I am always amazed by the dishonesty of these sanctimonious men:
“Since the law does not change the process for placing foster children or ban any family from adopting, we hope and pray this action will increase the number of children matched with loving families,” said the bishops.
Right. The bill is not discriminatory per se. It simply authorizes discrimination. To suggest that diminishing the pool of eligible parents will increase the number of successful adoptions is both idiotic and dishonest. “Hope and pray?” I would have some choice words for this pampered prelate.

The bishops link to a continuation of the story at Catholic News Agency where Governor Fallin repeats the same bullshit:
Fallin said the bill “allows faith-based agencies that contract with Oklahoma to continue to operate in accordance with their beliefs. In a day and time when diversity is becoming a core value to society because it will lead to more options, we should recognize its value for serving Oklahoma also because it leads to more options for loving homes to serve Oklahoma children.”
Discriminating against sexual minorities champions diversity?

Fallin is a Christian nutjob who does not respect the separation of church and state. She also signed a bill authorizing every public building to display the Ten Commandments. It is clearly unconstitutional. In fact it defies a prior ruling by the state's supreme court that it violates the Oklahoma constitution. This is the same imbecile who tried to have to Oklahoma National Guard deny spousal benefits to same-sex spouses in defiance of federal law. Fallin, by the way, is divorced.

Over 80 faith leaders and congregations sent a letter to Fallin urging her to veto the adoption bill.

Getting back to the bishops, try to imagine the plight of a gender nonconforming child. The Church would reject the kid's gender identity. Then he or she has almost no opportunity to be placed with understanding parents. This is disgusting and disgraceful.
