Jonathon Van Maren has a fondness for denigrating LGBT people

Jonathon Van Maren
Jonathon Van Maren, Defender of the Faith and conspiracy theorist
Jonathon Van Maren is a hypocrite. I will get to that shortly. First, however, Van Maren's latest polemic features a gay freelance columnist who says that he is boycotting the Pride Parade. According to Mr. Van Maren:
The media and progressive politicians like to gang up on conservative politicians and demand that they show up and frolic with the crowds or be damned as unforgivable bigots, despite the fact that these events now regularly expose children to male adult nudity and simulated sex acts, something that progressives seem to collectively ignore.

Van Maren does not clearly identify quoted text or necessarily who he is quoting. I believe that he is quoting someone else with:
Disturbingly, more and more parents are bringing young children to watch the parade, exposing them to provocative displays of sexuality that no child should witness. If a politician believes in family values, why would he or she want to be associated with such debauchery?
I do not entirely disagree. I just think that some of what Van Maren is describing is in bad taste. I also think that Van Maren's use of this narrative to denigrate LGBT people is in very bad taste. Furthermore, his is the classic bigoted attack, claiming that LGBT people pose a threat to "innocent" children.

I lack sufficient familiarity with Canadian custom or the quoted writer to weigh in fully.

There are no such displays here in Miami Beach nor in my forever-home, New York City. Van Maren writes about police just standing by. In both Miami Beach and New York City they are an integral part of the parades.

Every spring in this country there is a Catholic event that features more debauchery than all the Pride parades in North America combined. It commences on the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminates on the day before Ash Wednesday. I am referring, of course, to Mardis Gras in New Orleans.

One of the customs, for example, is to expose tits for beads. The more the woman gyrates, the more beads she receives. Moreover, the amount of public intoxication is staggering (as are the puddles of vomit on city streets and sidewalks). Another custom is for the local clubs that participate to hold all-male banquets in advance of the parade's start.

Undoubtedly this NOPD officer is gathering evidence of infractions
Presumably you can figure out where this is headed
Catholic priests and prelates are very much in attendance at these events. With a wink and a nod, the clergy know that it is their time to depart; that is before the strippers make their appearance. In a way, the priests endorse the exploitation of women.

So before Mr. Van Maren tars LGBT people with supposed exhibitions of bad taste at Pride events (and that is the sole purpose of his polemic) he should indulge in some other criticism.

Have I just indulged in whataboutism? Yes I have. If Canadian Pride events are in bad taste that is not excused by the fact that Mardis Gras is in bad taste. At the same time, Pride events do not reflect the values of LGBT people. We are also raising children. Sex is not at the core of our lives and certainly not central to our careers. We try to be good neighbors and good citizens while trying to contribute to our communities. We never get so much as a hint of those virtues from Van Maren.

I have commented on two other Van Maren pieces. His rather pedestrian agenda is quite easy to decode. Above all he is an unhinged Defender of the Faith, conspiracy theorist and LGBT antagonist.
