FRC attacks the SPLC - Reveals why it is considered a hate group

“Mr. Perkins cannot help himself. While he is trying to discredit the SPLC he is demonstrating why his organization is considered a hate group in the first place.”

Monday evening Tony Perkins, leader of Family Research Council, sent out an email titled: “Parents put on notice:” The banner reads:
SPLC Labels Christian Parents A “Hate Group”… We Must Push Back
I will get to those Christian parents shortly. Family Research Council is, in point of fact, a an anti-LGBT hate group. FRC earned that designation by the Southern Poverty Law Center in 2010. According to FRC's website:

Family Research Council believes that homosexual conduct is harmful to the persons who engage in it and to society at large, and can never be affirmed. It is by definition unnatural, and as such is associated with negative physical and psychological health effects.
Family Research Council even has an anti-LGBT specialist in Peter Sprigg. Recently Sprigg, a Baptist minister, has been promoting thoroughly discredited conversion therapy. Among Sprigg's other hobbies is the marginalization of transgender people.

There is much more but let's get back to Perkins' email:
In addition to labeling FRC, and many other Christian organizations “hate groups,” they have now turned their attention to teaching children in K-12 that LGBT lifestyles, gender confusion, and an “anything goes” sexuality are perfectly healthy and normal.
Presumably they are referring to the SPLC's Teaching Tolerance initiative. Its purpose is to provide schools with resources necessary to combating prejudice. Mr. Perkins cannot help himself. While he is trying to discredit the SPLC he is demonstrating why his organization is considered a hate group in the first place.

Assigning sexuality to a “lifestyle” is a familiar tactic of hate groups. It suggests that sexuality is a choice which just requires a lifestyle change. Lifestyle is a close cousin to “gender confusion” which is intended to suggest that trans and gender nonconforming youth just need therapy to become unconfused. The fact that such therapy does not exist doesn't bother Perkins. “Anything goes” is used to suggest supposedly pernicious sexual activities. Perkins has a vivid imagination.

As for “healthy and normal,” it is the consensus of medical science that Being L, G, B or T is a natural expression of human sexuality. It serves as another contrast. The SPLC is always scientifically accurate. FRC, on the other hand, promotes its agenda with junk science, sometimes published to substandard vanity journals.

A bit of broad-brush victimization:
While most parents are kept in the dark about the SPLC’s pro-LGBT curriculum, those parents who do find out about it and dare object to it are marginalized and silenced.
Really? Why would, or should, anyone object to a school curriculum that teaches kids not to be prejudiced? It is the responsibility of the school board to determine curricula. School boards are comprised of professional educators and ordinary citizens. FRC is comprised of professional religious crackpots and zealots at the fringes of society.

Proforma persecuted Christians:
That’s exactly what happened when a group of Minnesota parents decided to halt the LGBT propaganda—the SPLC sued them and because the parents dared fight back to protect their children, the SPLC labeled the parents a “hate group.”
Perkins does not identify the group but I assume that he is referring to the now defunct Parents Action League. That group was sponsored by John Helmberger's Minnesota Family Council. Mr. Perkins is a liar. The SPLC did not sue either Parents Action League or Minnesota Family Council.

There is some horrific background that Mr. Perkins would like to pretend does not exist. Between 2009 and 2011, nine students in Anoka-Hennepin School District committed suicide. Four or five of those kids were LGBT. Something had to be done but not if the Parents Action League could prevent it. The people behind the Parents Action League had been attempting to influence the school curriculum for decades and they were somewhat successful. For example, teachers were prohibited from discussing LGBT issues in their classrooms.

In 2011, the SPLC did sue the school district “challenging the pervasive anti-gay harassment in the district’s schools as well as a 'gag policy' that prevents teachers from discussing issues related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.” According to the SPLC at the time:
The lawsuit charges that LGBT students and students perceived as LGBT were subjected to anti-LGBT slurs on a daily basis and were physically threatened or attacked by peers. While many of these abuses occurred in front of teachers or were reported to school officials, school personnel almost always took insufficient action to stop the abuse.
At that time the school district was being investigated by the Justice Department and the U.S. Education Department. While the school district was negotiating a consent decree which would end both the suit and the investigations, Parents Action League was pushing back. At a school board meeting the league presented a lengthy list of demands.

The Manifesto:
Whereas Anoka Hennepin District 11 has devoted a special section on their website to GLBT issues, training and awareness.

And whereas the theme of school safety is being used as a pretext to advance a much broader agenda, the legitimization of homosexuality and related conduct to impressionable school children

And whereas the Anoka Hennepin school board is considering removing the protective sexual orientation curriculum policy, an action that undermines the academic focus of this district and open the door to pro-homosexual and related conduct materials in the school curriculum thereby exposing students to concepts hostile to there religious faith and/or moral conviction

And whereas school officials would be liable for violating parental rights by subjecting a child to homosexual and related conduct indoctrination

And whereas the Supreme Court in Meyer v Nebraska has held that parents’ right to direct the moral upbringing and education of their children is one of the most fundamental of all rights and a failure to abide by parental rights can result in liability for damages both the the school district

Whereas schools may face liability for intentional and negligent instruction of students who rely upon false and misleading information about sexual conduct and are subsequently harmed.

Whereas as superintendent Dennis Carlson and prevention coordinator Barry Scanlon went on a listening tour visiting the nine GSA clubs in the district January thru May of 2011 and have not conducted a listening tour with students of faith, moral conviction, ex-homosexuals and ex-transgenders

And whereas district 11 has ordered copies of pro-homosexual video “It Gets Better: Coming Out, Overcoming Bullying and Living a Life Worth Living,” edited by Dan Savage for secondary media centers

And whereas legal liability exists for the tort of negligence if it is proved that homosexual activists and organizations were granted access to students under responsibility and that students suffered physical or mental harm.

Therefore be it resolved the Parents Action League in Anoka Hennepin School District 11 demands the following ten actions be taken by our school board.

1. A new division within the student support services and a special section on the District 11 website devoted to student of faith, moral conviction, ex-homosexuals and ex-transgenders.

2. A listening tour by Superintendent Denny Carlson and district prevention coordinator Barry Scanlon with students of faith, moral conviction, ex-homosexuals, and ex-transgenders.

3. That District 11 administrators and staff work closely with pro-family and ex-homosexual and ex-transgender organizations to provide ongoing training to school counselors, school nurses, social workers, school psychologists, prevention specialists, student learning advocates and a number of secondary principals and principals.

4. Provide professional development opportunities in which philosophical, pedagogical, and political assumptions of GLBT advocacy are critically examined.

5. Provide webinars, seminars for all staff on over-coming sexual disorders

6. Provide training on bullying and suicide that protects all students.

7. Provide the history of gay-related immune deficiencies and acquired immune deficiencies and the medical consequences of homosexual acts.

8. That all health classes that address homosexuality be required to provide up-to-date information from the CDC on sexually transmitted diseases and HIV among the groups the CDC designates as men who have sex with men.

9. Provide the following pro-family, ex-homosexual, ex-transgender information and websites to all counselors, school psychologists

classroom teachers [the list was submitted to the board and not spoken at the meeting]

10. Provide pro-family, ex-homosexual and ex-transgender videos to secondary media centers.
Kids are murdering themselves and these nitwits come up with the above garbage.

Barb Anderson, chief spokesbigot for PAL was also an employee of Minnesota Family Council. Anderson was forever spouting BS about indoctrination which is usually shorthand for turning kids gay (oh my). She claimed that the homosexual agenda™ was all about forcing Christians into the closet.

The SPLC did, indeed, list PAL as a hate group and the school district ultimately changed its policies towards inclusiveness. Laurie Thompson, president of Parents Action League said “It is a privilege to be added to the long list of pro-family organizations that have been labeled as 'hate groups. The SPLC continues their strategy of defaming and name calling toward those whom they disagree with.” Not terribly original rhetoric.

Getting back to Mr. Perkins and his email:
FRC is committed to exposing the SPLC’s Teaching Tolerance school curriculum, currently being used by hundreds of educators nationwide, many of them unwittingly, for exactly what it is: anti-Christian, anti-family, anti-parent propaganda.

That’s why it is urgent I hear from you today. Your gift will help FRC expose the radical agenda of the SPLC …
Parents are being victimized! Be afraid!! Send money right now!!!

Perkins is claiming that he is going to use those donations to influence school districts. Perkins provides a very real reason for the continuing surveillance by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
