LaBarbera: The masochism of victimhood

Peter LaBarbera
Peter LaBarbera is probably smiling because of how much he enjoys manufactured victimhood.

According to Calvin Freiburger at HateSiteNews:
Over the weekend Facebook unpublished the page of a prominent social-conservative group for allegedly using unspecified “hate speech,” Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (AFTAH) president Peter LaBarbera revealed Monday.

AFTAH is dedicated to “apply[ing] the same single-minded determination to opposing the radical homosexual agenda and standing for God-ordained sexuality and the natural family as countless homosexual groups do in promoting their harmful agenda.” LaBarbera frequently debates homosexual issues on mainstream and pro-LGBT media, and has written for LifeSiteNews.

LaBarbera doesn't get it and never will. The dreaded Homosexual Agenda™ is only “harmful” if you are opposed to due process and equal protection regardless of sexual orientation. Peter is making a false equivalence. His opposition to gay people (and their equal protection) is based on the agenda formed from his interpretation of ancient texts. There is nothing positive for him in his bigotry (other than recognition by other bigots).

We react out of real necessity. Our advocacy is need-based. LaBarbera does not need to marginalize gay people and gay people pose no threat to LaBarbera. LaBarbera's advocacy is ideology-based. It has no real purpose. Or does he believe that we are responsible for hurricanes?

Americans for Truth About Homosexuality is deemed a hate group because it actively promotes falsehoods about LGBT people in an effort to marginalize them. It does so without any real potential benefit. The raison d'ĂȘtre is elusive.

LaBarbera doesn't actually do anything but his ilk are still trying to impose their religion on public policy. Shut up and worship aluminum foil for all we care. If they don't bother us, we won't bother them. Once they start claiming that we pose some manufactured threat then our opposition is required.
“Your Page has been unpublished for using hate speech, which goes against the Facebook Community Standards,” reads a notice LaBarbera shared on Twitter Monday morning. It claims the social media giant “allow[s] individuals to speak freely,” but “take[s] action on reports of verbal abuse directed at individuals.” No examples of hatred or verbal abuse are given.
“Of course, the ‘hate’ charge is spurious and effectively precludes all MORAL opponents of homosexuality from using [Facebook],” LaBarbera said via email. “AFTAH, a Christian educational organization, has from its inception condemned real hatred and violence against homosexuals (or anyone). We have long denounced groups like Westboro Baptist Church with its preposterous ‘God Hates Fags’ message.”
LaBarbera doesn't understand the difference between religious morality and hate speech. Hate speech mischaracterizes a minority group in order to demonize and marginalize them. What makes LaBarbera think that he is any different from the imbeciles at Westboro Baptist Church? Denouncing WBC does not operate to make him any better.

Moreover, I suspect that a majority of biblical scholars believes that the Bible represents the age in which it was written. In ancient times homosexuality was an unknown concept. The only men known to have sex with other men were patrician Romans who abused slave boys. In earlier times it was Persian patricians with slave boys. Gay people certainly existed, in total secrecy. The penalty, for example, for two legionnaires caught having sex was crucifixion.

LaBarbera chooses to embrace biblical literalism while picking and choosing what is, or is not, to be taken literally. Who makes those choices? Sometimes it is society but most of the time it is people like LaBarbera. Or does he believe that insolent children should be murdered?

Peter loves being a victim and Facebook has obliged. It is a private company and attempting to regulate its policies is probably unconstitutional. The threats will continue for as long as Trump is in office. Instead of complaining about conservative censorship people like LaBarbera should wonder if religious conservatives are out of touch … and out of their depth. They have the ability to espouse their faith without smearing others. They choose the less civil path.
