Would the Washington Post print the views of David Duke?

“Mr. Staver should not be welcome in any part of polite society that requires wearing clean underwear.”

Thursday, the Washington Post runs with: Some anti-vaccination parents cite religious exemptions. Measles outbreaks could change that. Hate group leader Mat Staver is liberally quoted throughout. The piece is written by religion reporter Sarah Pulliam Bailey.

It is unlikely that the Washington Post would print the views of David Duke on most subjects. The reason is obvious. David Duke is not a responsible spokesperson for any issue. If the paper did quote David Duke it would be in the context of an article about racism or anti-Semitism. Why then does the Washington Post print the opinions of Mat Staver in matters unrelated to LGBT controversies?

In other words, if the Washington Post wrote a story about bans on conversion therapy it might include a statement from Mat Staver while hopefully mentioning the fact that Liberty Counsel is deemed an anti-LGBT hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Indeed, if the reporter was doing his job, he would quote someone asserting that conversion therapy exists primarily to foster discrimination and persecution. In that context readers could make up their own mind about whether Staver's religious liberty BS was just a pretext for anti-LGBT bigotry.

However, using Staver as a source for a story about vaccinations — quite matter-of-factly — confers upon Staver a level of dignity and credibility that he does not deserve. Mr. Staver should not be welcome in any part of polite society that requires wearing clean underwear.

At the core of the problem is the fact that some people see a difference between David Duke and Mat Staver. There is no difference. Both are intolerant bigots. Bigotry against LGBT people is no different than racism or anti-Semitism. Both should be rejected and the purveyors of intolerance should be rejected.
