Heyer is a liar

Walt Heyer

According to professional ex-transgender Walt Heyer: Ex-transgender Walt Heyer: 'We are ruining an entire generation of young people'. Entire huh? Heyer has donations to glom and books to sell.
The legend of Walt:
According to a piece in the Christian Post.
Heyer is the founder of Sex Change Regret and is reportedly hearing from many more people who now feel as he does.

"We get letters from parents or the transgenders themselves asking for help, after they've lived the life like I did for five, six, 15, 18, 20, all the way up to 30 years. And they are saying 'Walt, can you help me de-transition. This was the biggest mistake of my life.'"

He recently helped a schoolteacher, a pharmacist, and his good friend Jamie Shupe, the first man to be legally recognized in the United States as "non-binary."
Heyer is a liar.
First of all, Heyer is not getting “letters.” I had a friend ask for his address to send him some materials. Heyer's reply:
…thank you for contacting me…
Email is essential in keeping a historical record of our exchange of information so if it "don't fit" in email I cannot help you. Walt Heyer
More importantly, Heyer is not in a position to “help” anyone. Heyer had surgery nearly 40 years ago. Heyer has no training in medicine or counseling. His statements demonstrate that he knows nothing about gender dysphoria. The diagnostics have changed over the last four decades and  have become much more objective.

Lately Heyer has been claiming to have dissociative identity disorder (DID), previously known as multiple personality disorder. Perhaps he has an “alter” who believes he (or she) is a psychologist. M. Night Shyamalan fans might have other ideas.
But let's get to the “good” stuff:
"The only reason I am able to speak to you today is because after 46 years dealing with this issue, I was able to de-transition in 1990 after I had psychotherapy, the very same psychotherapy [transgender activists] are trying to prevent people from having. Why? Because they don't want them to de-transition."

"It's painful to get these emails from people whose lives have been totally torn apart."
Heyer is confused. If someone wanted to de-transition (desist) they could receive “the very same psychotherapy” that Heyer claims to have received. If someone were unsure of their gender identity, they could receive psychotherapy. What is prohibited in some locales are efforts to change a minor's gender identity which is entirely different from counseling someone who wants to desist.

Heyer is a liar. The objective of those ever-present activists he refers to is to prevent children from receiving damaging reparative therapy which is based on religious pseudoscience. It does not work and it is potentially harmful, particularly when a child has transitioned. If Mr. Heyer has some peer-reviewed research published to a respectable academic journal in support of reparative therapy, he fails to reference it. 35 states have no bans so there is plenty of material to work with.

As for email, Heyer has (at least) three websites. The primary one is Sex Change Regret. The only way to get Heyer's email address is to click:

Heyer's email address in on the PayPal page. With respect to the above, I have no idea what the “IT” is.

Heyer's second site is Walt Heyer Ministries (in case you have any doubt that Heyer has a religious objection). No email address there at all. It's primary purpose is to sell books and to direct traffic to Sex Change Regret.

The third website is the batshittiest of the lot. It is called Trading My Sorrows. There we can find Heyer's email address. There you can also find articles by pseudo-psychiatrist and defender of the faith Richard P. Fitzgibbons.

The point I am trying to make is that it is very difficult to find out how to contact Mr. Heyer. I think that many, if not most, of his supposed stories are fiction — anonymous validators.
Shameless BS — Heyer is a liar:
The entire basis of much of transgender medicalization is self-diagnosis.
That is false. There is a very objective criteria for first diagnosing gender dysphoria and its severity. Adolescents transition because they are in distress. Doctors do not transition children. Children transition themselves because it relieves their suffering. People like Heyer would prefer that they suffer rather than transition because trans youth create a contradiction to scripture.
According to DSM5 (emphasis added):
In children, gender dysphoria diagnosis involves at least six of the following and an associated significant distress or impairment in function, lasting at least six months.
  1. A strong desire to be of the other gender or an insistence that one is the other gender
  2. A strong preference for wearing clothes typical of the opposite gender
  3. A strong preference for cross-gender roles in make-believe play or fantasy play
  4. A strong preference for the toys, games or activities stereotypically used or engaged in by the other gender
  5. A strong preference for playmates of the other gender
  6. A strong rejection of toys, games and activities typical of one’s assigned gender
  7. A strong dislike of one’s sexual anatomy
  8. A strong desire for the physical sex characteristics that match one’s experienced gender
We are manufacturing their depression, their anxiety, and it has turned into a huge industry that people are profiting from after kids lives are completely torn apart."

It's really beyond my understanding why we are even having this discussion because it shouldn't be happening. I don't believe any doctor who injects a young person with hormone blockers should have a license to do so.
No, Mr. Heyer. No! Heyer is a liar. The symptoms of acute gender dysphoria are depression and anxiety. Heyer makes up this crap out of convenience. As for how doctors treat adolescents with acute gender dysphoria, I suggest that Mr. Heyer obtain a medical degree. One is not required to cite the recommendations for gender-affirming care by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Great idea Walt. Use the founder of the TransYouth project in an attempt to make a point:
"We do not know who the transgender kids are," he said, referencing the words of Kristina Olson, a research psychologist at the University of Washington who has said scientists "don’t have definitive data one way or another" on who is and who is not transgender.
What Olson is referring to in Heyer's quote is uncertainty over the number of trans kids in the population. The intended inference is to suggest that doctors cannot diagnose gender dysphoria. Heyer is a shameless liar. He continues:
"Do you get that? That should sink in. They cannot actually identify who trans kids are except by them saying so. There is no test. there is no proof," he said.
Again, that is not what Olson is referring to. The two sentences above are complete bullshit. Heyer is a liar. Here is what Dr. Olson's research reveals:
Transgender children showed no elevations in depression and slightly elevated anxiety relative to population averages. They did not differ from the control groups on depression symptoms and had only marginally higher anxiety symptoms.

Socially transitioned transgender children who are supported in their gender identity have developmentally normative levels of depression and only minimal elevations in anxiety, suggesting that psychopathology is not inevitable within this group. Especially striking is the comparison with reports of children with GID; socially transitioned transgender children have notably lower rates of internalizing psychopathology than previously reported among children with GID living as their natal sex.
In other words, transition relieves anxiety and depression to the point where it is almost comparable to the general population.
Again, Heyer is a liar:
Heyer has worked with hundreds of people over the past decade who have sought to de-transition and over half of them were sexually abused, he said. Heyer himself was sexually abused several times when he was 9 years old by his uncle. His parents did not believe him and said he was a liar, which compounded his gender confusion.
The above is absolute bullshit. Why would anyone consult with Heyer? Hundreds? You have to hunt down his email address and he does not provide his telephone number or address. Moreover, I cannot find any peer-reviewed research suggesting that sexual abuse has any association with gender dysphoria which starts to show up at around age four. The term “gender confusion” is right out of the Vatican. It cannot be found in medical literature.
Representing the Kelsey Coalition — a recently formed non-partisan group of parents of trans-identifying children that have been harmed by transgender medical treatments — one such mother, "Elaine," explained the horror of what can happen when surgeons cut off the reproductive organs of minors, highlighting the case of transgender television star Jazz Jennings of TLC's "I Am Jazz."
Another anonymous trans denial website which opposes the Equality Act. It also opposes that NIH study of adolescent gender dysphoria. Why one wonders? If this is not put up by a religious group, the NIH research might reveal what they cannot accept? They also join the bullshit rodeo:
Recent US surveys reveal that 2-3% of high school and middle school students now identify as transgender. Higher rates have been reported at some colleges.
It's 1.8% (CDC) and they are using transgender as an umbrella term. It does not indicate that 1.8% have transitioned. For that matter it doesn't even mean that 1.8% have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria.
Heyer has two objectives. The first is economic. He wants to drive traffic to his site in order to get donation and for people to purchase his mediocre books. The second is religious. Heyer is a conservative Christian (Catholic I believe) who does not want anyone to transition. Supposedly it makes his god angry.

The bottom line is that Heyer wants to misinform parents. Parents with a child who is showing signs of gender dysphoria should consult with a psychiatric specialist. Get a second opinion. These doctors are not out to ruin the lives of children. They are also not determined to make every patient transgender (as the religious set would have people believe).

Ultimately folks like Heyer do not want people to trust medical science. They prefer that people are wed to faith-based belief systems.
