Mad Mat Staver - The SPLC smear campaign

Acknowledged problems at the SPLC affected its 300 employees. The actions of Liberty Counsel and other hate groups affect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people whom they do not know.

The Southern Poverty Law Center had a problem. They have not been specific but founder Morris Dees was apparently creating a toxic work environment for women and minorities. Dees' employment was terminated and the organization brought in Tina Tchen, a prominent lawyer and former chief of staff to Michelle Obama, to evaluate the organization, “top to bottom.”

The SPLC did precisely what an organization should do when a senior-level executive creates a problem. They axed the employee and brought in an unbiased outsider to review the organization and its culture.

Hate Group Leader Mat Staver (Liberty Counsel) thinks that this is an opportunity to discredit the SPLC and, thus, diminish the effect of its listing of Liberty Counsel as a hate group.
The Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) board of directors recently appointed an attorney to lead a review regarding the ongoing sexual harassment and racial discrimination inside their organization, while hypocritically labeling Christian, pro-family, and conservative nonviolent groups, such as Liberty Counsel, as “hate groups.”
Morris Dees' conduct has nothing whatsoever to do with whether of not Liberty Counsel is a hate group. Here's a thought. Liberty Counsel should hire someone to review the organization and coordinate with the SPLC. After all, there are hundreds of thousands of Christian groups and only about 45 are labeled as hate groups.
More irrelevant nonsense:
In contrast to the SPLC, women are the majority and lead most departments at Liberty Counsel, and there is a high minority representation among the staff. In fact, 40 percent of the attorneys are female, and 60 percent of the departments are led by women. The president is a woman, and a female attorney leads a major litigation project. Also, 31 percent of the staff are of ethnicities including Hispanic, African-American, Asian and Lebanese.
Tell me, Mr. Staver: Are there any gay attorneys in that group?
What does racial and ethnic diversity have to do with anti-LGBT bigotry? The unhinged Mat Staver (Mad Mat) attacks, marginalizes and denigrates LGBT people every day.
Founder and Chairman Mat Staver is chief counsel and a member of the executive board of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, the largest Hispanic evangelical organization in America. Staver is also a chair of Salt and Light Council, which hosts Content of Character Series events for black pastors.
What does that prove? Virtually every Black and Hispanic organization in America disagrees with Mad Mat Staver with respect to LGBTQ people. Those organizations support the Equality Act.
More than 60 nonprofit leaders released an open letter this week to the media, urging news outlets to stop relying on the SPLC “hate group” labels. The letter calls for a politically-neutral investigation of the SPLC and the release of pertinent documents to the public. The “SPLC has lost all credibility. We call on all media, corporations, social media companies, and financial institutions to immediately stop relying on their discredited and partisan ‘hate’ and ‘extremist’ lists,” the letter reads.
Of course. Hate groups hate nothing more than to be outed as hate groups. The letter demands to see documents that are confidential. Let's see if Liberty Counsel, Family Research Council or American Family Association would release private documents. They make the usual false claims.
Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) also sent a letter to the IRS, encouraging an investigation into whether or not the SPLC should lose its tax-exempt status for its fundraising based on “defamation.”
More about Sen. Cotton's stupidity is here. His letter to the IRS is nothing more than a political stunt. Defamation is a legal term. The best defense to a charge of defamation is the truth.

Noticeably absent from Mad Mat's tirade is a reference to what SPLC says about Liberty Counsel and why that information is incorrect. I wonder why.
