Sexual orientation from the lunatic fringe

When it suits certain conservative Christians, pedophilia is a sexual orientation. They have claimed that protecting people from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is a “pedophile protection act.” Presumably, they will do so again in the future.

At other times, when it suits the same deranged people, the possible idea that pedophilia is being conveyed as a sexual orientation is simply appalling. Make up your mind!

Circulating through the echo chamber (that these same people subscribe to) are headlines like: Pedophilia Being Taught As “Sexual Orientation” in California Schools. There is no shortage of replays. I would note that progressives do not ordinarily do this. I, for one, am solely interested in original content.

Based on the dates this might have originated from a post by someone named Alex Newman. Mr. Newman apparently learned how to write articles from WND. He is more interested in manufacturing a controversy than learning about and then reporting an issue.

According to Mr. Newman:
Government school officials in California think it is “really important” to teach children about pedophilia and pederasty in the classroom because it is a “sexual orientation.” That is according to a top official for California's Brea Olinda School District, who admitted to parents that it was being done — and that it would continue, despite the outrage. The implications are mind-blowing.
If one is a curious critical thinker, some questions are relevant?
  1. Is pedophilia a sexual orientation?
  2. Is it being taught as such in public schools?
  3. If so, what are the implications?
I know how my readers would want me to answer the first question but it's not that simple. According to the science there are two variants: Pedophilic disorder and pedophilic sexual orientation. A diagnosis of pedophilic disorder requires the individual to either act on their sexual urges or experience significant distress as a result of their urges or fantasies. Without either of those criteria a person might have pedophilic sexual orientation but not pedophilic disorder. Either way it is attributed almost exclusively to men.

In our world, we define sexual orientation as the attraction to men, women, both or neither. I would posit (admittedly without evidence) that the overwhelming majority of us act on those attractions. That is in direct contrast to pedophilic sexual orientation which is based solely on fantasies. Once someone acts on those fantasies it becomes a disorder.

Perhaps of greater importance are the legal and social constructs. Pedophilia is illegal around the globe. It is a very serious crime of rape. In Florida last summer, Nicholas E. Fogarty, 36, was sentenced to 27 years in prison for having sex with underage girls.

In addition to the legality, pedophilia and pederasty are socially unacceptable, Organizations like NAMBLA are forced to operate in the shadows.

To sum all this up, according to medical science there exists pedophilic sexual orientation but it is not comparable to sexual orientation as we know it with respect to heterosexuals or homosexuals.

That brings me to the second question of what is being taught in public schools. Let's get back to Alex Newman:
The stunning admission came after a parent-information meeting last month for the Brea Olinda Unified School District (BOUSD). Stephanie Yates, founder of Informed Parents of California, asked school officials why they were “teaching pedophilia in school to 9th graders.” But instead of a denial that such an atrocity was taking place, a top school official confirmed it was happening and acted like there was nothing wrong with it.
In the above there are a couple of bovine turds. First of all, “teaching pedophilia” is intentionally misleading. Stephanie Yates simply retooled her intellectually dishonest homophobia and transphobia which results in phrases like “teaching homosexuality” as if kids were being instructed in how to be gay. The proper question is: Are children learning about pedophilia in school?

Secondly, there is no evidence whatsoever, that the school official, Kerrie Torres, associated pedophilia with sexual orientation. There is a video in Newman's piece which undermines his claim. Torres does say something about sexual orientation as  an element of curricula but nothing that would combine orientation with pedophilia. Even if she did, it is just a mistake on her part. It is not an end-of-world proposition.

Bottom line:
From what I can tell, children are learning about pedophilia in proper context. I see nothing wrong with that. I clearly recall, in tenth grade, learning about the habits of Roman aristocrats. In fact many, if not most, of their brides were underage. I am sure that the kids are being taught that pedophilia is socially and legally unacceptable.
What is the big deal?
There is none. This is all perfectly harmless. The lunatic fringe is simply trying to exploit something to suit their agenda. It is an indication of a paucity of evidence regarding anything substantive.

Note: In the interests of simplicity I have, for the most part, combined pedophilia and pederasty. Both are illegal and socially unacceptable. According to the science, the dividing line is 13 years of age. Both involve sex with persons below the age of legal consent.
