May I ask a stupid question?

via Calvary Chapel Pastor's Blog
The headline reads: Ex-LGBT Will March on Washington This Weekend to Celebrate Freedom. Why do these people feel compelled to publicly demonstrate their personality disorders?

At best these are gay and transgender people who are pretending to be heterosexual and cisgender. They claim that Jesus has made them heterosexual and cisgender. The reality is just the opposite: The pretense is for the glory of Jesus. Last year, a handful of people showed up. This year, organizers Jeffrey McCall, Mary Jenna Nixon (“M.J.”), Edward Byrd and Kimberly Zember are hoping for a bigger turnout.

What is the point? Evangelism? So-called ex-gay and ex-transgender people largely exist because the provide a pretext for the religious right to oppose nondiscrimination laws. As for the people themselves, most of the ex-whatever folks seem to have an economic interest in claiming to be ex-*.

In the absence of a meaningful résumé and marketable skills, this is now what Jeffrey McCall (a former drug addict) does for a living. M.J. Nixon has a minuscule nonprofit (Uprooted Heart) acting as a conduit for donations. In 2017 it had revenues below $50,000. Is she also looking for income and relevance? All four of these people seem to be unemployed and unemployable.

To potentially answer my dumb question, these people are doing this for themselves, not for the benefit of anyone else. Even worse, they promise freedom from being LGBT. Every one of them knows that they are now prisoners of their own sexuality. Every one of them is still gay unless you actually believe that someone can pray the gay away.

I tend to believe Alan Chambers who ran Exodus International. One year he was the darling of evangelical Christians. The next year he admitted that no one really changes and he offered his apologies for the people who were misled and injured. McCall and company will never have the class to admit that they made a mistake. That takes real courage. Pretending to change your sexuality to appear to conform with religious dogma is one of the stupidest things imaginable. Metaphorical eunuchs make no sense.

If there is a larger turnout this year it will not mean that their message is meaningful or inspirational.
