No Mr. Staver. No. Being transgender is not a political statement

Hate Group Leader Mat Staver (Liberty Counsel) is having a shitfit over a transitioning teacher in Wisconsin. The well regarded science teacher explained the transition to his students. During the process he has asked his students to call him “Mix” instead of “Mr.” You would think that this is an end-of-world event. According to Mad Mat Staver:
School administrators allowed a male science teacher in the Madison Metropolitan School District to show a personal “transgender coming out” video to every class of K-5th grade children at Allis Elementary School. The male teacher also instructed all of the students to call him by a woman’s name, an invented title of “Mix” instead of “Mr.,” and to call him by false plural pronouns. Liberty Counsel sent a records request to the school district to begin uncovering the full extent of this teacher’s inappropriate activism in the classroom.
The “inappropriate activism in the classroom” consists of a link to the image of a Facebook page. I happen to think that the teacher showed excellent judgment in her explanation. It reflects the real life struggle of trans folks. But let's back up a bit. This individual has gender dysphoria which is causing considerable discomfort which is the reason that she transitioned.

The teacher who now goes as Vica Steel didn't raise her hand and volunteer to be tormented by a medical condition. The only way to get relief is to transition. Is she supposed to get fired because of a medical condition? In the alternative, is she obligated to be in distress because she cannot mitigate her condition with transitioning? And what damage has she done? Transgender people exist and they all went through a transition; sometimes in school and sometimes in the workplace. They all had to explain the what and why.

Mad Mat does not approve. That's his problem; not Ms. Steel's. Furthermore, the kids are learning a valuable lesson about tolerance and diversity which applies to the child with a physical deformity or the student with a learning disability or the kid with mixed-race parents or the kid with gay parents.

Mad Mat sent a public records request to Jennifer P. Cheatham, Superintendent of the Madison Metropolitan School District. It includes this “baffle them with your bullshit” paragraph regarding a video that Steel made with her wife:
The video appears to violate several District policies, as well as the constitutional prohibition against schools enforcing any kind of “orthodoxy: “If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.” West Virginia v. Barnette, 319 U. S. 624 (1943). This principle applies to manipulative “requests” by a male teacher that children refer to him as a member of or mixture of the opposite sex; as well as to fabricated prefixes or titles like “Mx.;” and to false or grammatically improper “pronouns” like “they.” The classroom is not a forum for Mr. Busenbark’s activism (“Since coming out, my activist tendencies have amplified.”).2
West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette (1943) is not on point. The state was forcing students to salute the U.S. flag. The children in a family of Jehovah's Witnesses refused to perform the salute and were sent home from school for non-compliance. The children were threatened that they would be sent to reform school and their parents faced prosecution for causing juvenile delinquency.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that compelling public schoolchildren to salute the flag was unconstitutional. The distinctive difference is that Ms. Steel's students were not compelled to engage in any conduct. The idea that this amounted to the imposition of some orthodoxy is patently absurd. I call Staver “Mad Mat” for good cause. Among other things he becomes completely unglued over LGBT school teachers.

Staver also believes that he is far more clever than he really is. He had Richard Mast request records from the school district indicating advance parental approval. Such approval is not required; it's not sex-ed. Staver/Mast are also their own worst enemy. Part of the document request is this blather:
Any and all emails or other documents reviewing or analyzing the video content, video showing, or pronoun “request” for compliance with the following District policies:
a. Policy 4610 – Wellness Policy (all instruction should be “age-appropriate, medically accurate, non-stigmatizing, and inclusive for all students”)
b. Policy 3170 – Controversial Issues (“The study of and the teaching of controversial issues shall be in an academic atmosphere as free as possible from bias and prejudice.”)
c. Policy 9000 - Use of District Resources (“no employee… of the [school board] shall use District property, resources, facilities, equipment, supplies, services, or time-in-pay status for personal use… or to promote any political …cause.”)
d. Policy 8253 - Political Activities (“staff shall refrain from exploiting the institutional privileges of their professional positions....”)
Item “a” is a non-starter. Item “b” presupposes that having gender dysphoria and transitioning is controversial. It is not. Item “c” is absurd. There is nothing political about being transgender. The same goes for item “d.” Mad Mat Staver is an imbecile.

My guess is that the school district will refer this matter to its lawyers who will undoubtedly be more competent than any of the idiots at Liberty Counsel. Furthermore, Staver has produced all of this noise over something that is inconsequential. Mad Mat was on Todd Starnes' show yesterday. Starnes is as moronic as Staver.

Meanwhile, I will get a note off to the district superintendent ensuring she knows that Liberty Counsel is a certified hate group.
