The reality does not deter Brian S. Brown from asking for money for National Organization for Marriage, supposedly to prevent enactment of the measure. Were it possible for the Equality Act to become law — if we had the votes in the Senate and if Trump said he would sign it — there is not a damned thing that NOM could do about it.
The fact that we do not have the votes in the Senate, or McConnell's support or Trump's commitment has absolutely nothing to do with NOM. Trump and the GOP will continue to pander to the religious right, primarily evangelical Christian pressure groups, until doing so runs out of steam. Those evangelicals are not only solidly Republican; they turn out to vote.
Mr. Brown sent an email to supporters with the text:
While we work to defeat the dangerous INequality Act (HR 5 / S 788), every donation we receive will be instantly doubled owing to the generosity of some dedicated supporters, up to a total of $50,000!Brown is telling every single recipient of that email that he (Brown) thinks that they (the recipient) is stupid. Moreover, the matching donation is a scam. Brown is just restructuring donations already received or promised. George Soros' foundation is the only donor that I have ever seen making matching contributions. It's a safe bet that the Soros foundations are not giving NOM any money.
… your generous gift of $500 will mean a total of $1,000 that we can put to work fighting the dangerous, anti-religious legislation egregiously misnamed the "Equality Act."
The sanctimonious blowhard thinks that divorce is a terrible evil. That does not apply to being divorced from truthfulness. Not only does Brown lie to donors about how their funds will be used, he routinely lies about LGBTQ people in an attempt to fill NOM's coffers.
