Blaming gays for the murder of a priest by a burglar reminds me of "blood libel"

What could motivate someone to blame gays for a murder by a thief?
Catholic Church and Rectory

Kevin Wells writes: My uncle, a heroic priest, was murdered while cleaning up gay mafia in DC parish.

Nearly 20 years ago Msgr. Thomas Wells, was murdered in his Maryland rectory of Mother Seton Parish. The murderer, Robert Paul Lucas, was a 25-year-old tree trimmer who lived out of his car.

Kevin Wells writes:
An unshakable conviction, shared by dozens of priests and thousands of lay faithful in the Maryland/DC corridor, is that Msgr. Wells's life and 29-year priesthood ended as a direct result of the active homosexuality practiced by priests who once lived in that rectory.

The premise for this conspiracy theory is that two priests at Mother Seton Parish were accused of abusing teenage boys. On that basis Wells continues:
A close friend and confidant of Tommy's, a secret service agent and police officer involved with the investigatory work of the murder, knew my uncle
[…]
"Msgr. Wells was the hand-picked priest to get rid of the rot. He was to report to the Cardinal on what he'd discovered," the secret service agent told me. "I have no doubt about it — that night, his murderer was looking for a 'trick.' Msgr. Wells was murdered because of the homosexual activity that had taken place in that rectory."
To the best of my knowledge there is no such thing as a “a secret service agent and police officer.” Those are mutually exclusive roles. The notion that a secret service agent would be allowed to participate in a local criminal investigation seems far-fetched.

The theory that Lucas was looking for gay sex and then murdered the priest is patently absurd. What would have been the motive? Moreover, there is no evidence that the murderer is gay.

The truth is that the priest discovered Lucas in a robbery.
Kevin Wells claims to be a pious Catholic. As such he should not be advancing a conspiracy theory. He should be truthful. He does not honor his uncle's legacy by lying about his demise. Kevin Wells must really hate gay people.

This reminds me of the similar baseless accusations that have been made for centuries about Jews as a pretext for persecution. It is very similar to “blood libel.” Gays cruising for sex are violent predators.

June 19, 2000: The Frederick News-Post:
A 25-year-old Clarksburg man has been charged with killing a priest who caught him burglarizing the rectory of Mother Seton Parish earlier this month, police said.

Robert Paul Lucas, a tree trimmer who lived out of his car … "admitted his involvement" in the violent stabbing of Monsignor Thomas Wells sometime between 10:30 p.m. June 7 and 8 a.m. June 8, according to Montgomery County Police.
[…]
Detectives recovered some of the items stolen from the rectory. The murder weapon has not been found.

Police said Mr. Lucas has a record of crimes including burglary.
[…]
Capt. Barney Forsythe, director of the Major Crimes division, said the "brutal crime" occurred when the monsignor awakened and tried to stop the burglary at his residence.
On August 14, 2001 at the same outlet:
Before imposing sentences of 25 years for murder, 10 for robbery and seven and-a-half years for burglary, to be served consecutively, Judge McGuckian said "the viciousness of the murder and robbery and burglary do warrant a sentence outside the guidelines, but because there is no prior record, I can't justify the maximum the state suggests."
Which narrative makes more sense? A robbery by a guy with a comparable criminal record or a guy wandering into a rectory hoping to have sex with a priest?
